Stone is on The Score. In response to a caller inquiring about Cintron's presence at Spring Training, Stone said he "knows" the Cubs are working on a few things... He went on to say that in addition to Roberts, the Cubs need Sherrill to face the various lefties and switch hitters (in NY and Philly specifically). Anyway, it's hard to know if he's speculating or talking with some idea of what the Cubs are seeking. He doesn't think Eyre is reliable enough to soley depend on him.

Psh, why do we need Merrill when we have Neal Cotts?

I'd say George Sherrill is better than Cotts but it's speculation that the Cubs are after him.

I was being sarcastic but whatever.

I doubt they are if the quotes out of Baltimore are any indication. Baltimore is installing Sherrill as their closer. I think they want him to build his value through closing for a while and then flip him when somebody gets desperate for way more than he's worth.

I agree with your third sentence. I think they are willing to part with Sherrill. He's not part of their future, so they don't really care if he is their closer of the present. But the more they make him seem important to their team, the more they can justify asking for him. Just attempting to get as much as they can for him. But if push comes to shove and not including Sherrill would hold up moving Roberts and getting something worthwhile for him, I think they would include him.

Of course, that entire theory is based on the assumption that Angelos and the Orioles are truly motivated to get something good in exchange for Roberts. I think they are, but they might not be...as evidenced by the ups and downs of this now 223 page thread.

Roberts is not in camp again today.

Gotta wonder about this "stomach ailment." It's probably just a coincidence, but it does seem funny.

Baltimore Sun

Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts returned to camp today after being rushed to a local hospital around 4:30 a.m. yesterday morning with severe stomach pain.

Roberts, who missed yesterday's workout, underwent blood and urine tests and a CT scan before being released. He said doctors believe he might have had a kidney stone that broke up.

I don't know if I want a player whose got kidney stone issues on the team. What if he misses a key AB in the playoffs because he's off passing a kidney stone? :)

I hear HGH is good for kidney stones. =D>

I wouldn't buy high on a single standout year from Sherrill. It's not like we're talking about a lefty who pitches a lot of innings either, like Pedro Feliciano, Hideki Okajima, C. J. Wilson, Doug Brocail, or Ron Mahay, Sherrill averages a pretty low number of IP/G even for a LOOGY.

I'd like to see the Orioles try and make a closer out of Sherrill, he doesn't have enough tricks against righties.

Irony: People saying we need Sherrill and grousing about Cotts not realizing buying high on Sherrill now would be like buying high on Cotts after 2005.

for those thinking that soriano would still lead off if we get roberts...lou was on the score this morning & said hendry is working on two deals. If one of them goes through...soriano would not be leading off...right from the horses mouth. also, he said howry is the closer, dempster is "on a mission", fuko will bat third w/ Theriot second unless this trade is made in which both theriot & soriano would move down.

Oh, you've been right all along!

Hold up bro. I heard the same interview and Lou said he was "thinking" about putting Fuko third. Of course he would have to talk with DLee first and for now DLee was in the 3 hole. He never made any commitments today with Mike North and will let things "play out in Spring Training" no need to get all hot on a simple interview.

Wow, you're just making things up as you go. Lou did not commit to Howry as closer. BTW, you shouldn't read anything into Lou's attempts to downplay potential moves. He has to say he's happy with the team as presently constituted... He left the door open for closer and lineup positioning.

that was certainly not my intent. We'll see how it plays out. It was just interesting getting his comments on some of these matters after all of the speculation in the offseason. Mark me down as rooting for the Roberts/Burnett combo as the daily double. I've also heard from one of my sources that there have been some discussions w/ the A's regarding Rich Harden. He is a risk for obvious reasons, but wow...what a buy low candidate w/ a stretch upside. That would make up for any Prior loss is he finally returns to form.
