Gallagher/Marshall/Cedeno is too steep a price. If you take away Roberts' .902 OPS in 2005 his career looks unimpressive. He's been a good basestealer for the past 2 years but that's not nearly enough to make me trade away all our starting pitching depth. Better to let DeRosa play 2B and keep Gallagher and Marshall for insurance in case Dempster and Marquis tank, which is very likely.

You cannot choose to arbitrarily remove a season from a player's career to suit your argument, especially a recent year. If you want to minimize the impact of a 'career year' and still present a case, you should use three-year splits.

Roberts three-year splits are still very impressive for a 2B: .296 .371 .452 .823

By comparison, DeRosa's three-year: .288 .359 .438 .797

Not a significant upgrade, but an upgrade.

According to the guys at OH, Rosenthal was on the radio this morning and said he didn't think Marshall would be part of the deal.

Why is anyone starting a sentence with according to the guys at OH?

They have 0 credibility. They've now been wrong on this trade in every way it can possibly be wrong.

I think we can trust what they heard on the radio...

This deal feels very much like a lot of people jumped the gun on calling this a done deal. Wouldn't be surprised to see Roberts traded, but not to the cubs. Surprised the Red Sox or the Yankees haven't jumped on him. An Arod/Jeter/Roberts collection would be an amazing 3rd, SS, 2nd base combo. Wouldn't matter whose on first.

I doubt the Orioles would trade him within their division.

Arod/Jeter/Cano is what they got and is better

Jason Marquis and Dempster project as the most likely 4-5 starters for Lou Piniella. If Marshall and Gallagher were both traded to Baltimore, the cast behind them would be headed by Kevin Hart, the fragile Angel Guzman and unproven prospects Donald Veal, Jeff Samardzija, Adam Harben and Jose Ascanio. There are still some serviceable free-agent pitchers on the market, including Josh Fogg, Livan Hernandez, Bartolo Colon, Kyle Lohse and Jason Jennings.

That scares the crap out of me. If the deal goes through we NEED to sign Hernandez and that still is not the best case senario.

That's what I've been trying to say. It's frightening what the back of our rotation might become if Marshall + Gallagher are dealt and no viable replacement is signed.

So Gallagher, Marshall, and Cedeno for Roberts? Thats WAY too much for a guy who we really dont need and isnt much of an upgrade over what we have. Plus hes on "The List". Sure, he says he only smoked it once, but he didnt inhale, or whatever, but still.

If Ronny or either Sean turn out to be anything, this will rank up their with the Swisher deal. Id give them Marshall and Cedeno, and thats more generous than JH should be.

Right. Marshall and Cedeno might be enough to net us Julio Franco, if that.

At least he can play short stop.

While I have no real opinion either way on the potential trade that is being discussed, I think in order for people to properly evaluate the ramifications of the trade, they need to look at not only how much of an upgrade that Roberts is over DeRosa, but how much of an upgrade having DeRosa on the bench would be over someone like Fontenot.

Maybe it has already been discussed in this thread, but I didn't fee like searching through a hundred pages to find out. However, all I've seen in the past few pages is talk of how "Roberts offers a marginal upgrade over DeRosa" and no further discussion of the trickle-down effect.

The sad thing is that Pittsburg may end up with the best pitching staff in the division.

As for Marquis, the only solution is keep him in the rotation for the first hald, and at the break, DL him with a phantom injury and trade for a rent-a-pitcher if were a contender.

This particular aspect of the trade has been discussed.

We must also consider having only one guy who can play SS on the roster, Ryan Theriot, and no longer having our best option for 5th starter and 6th starter.

I'm pretty sure I've been fooled 3 or 4 times this morning by the Tribune headline "Cubs deal for Orioles leadoff hitter" not immediatley noticing the last work, "likely". It's that darn red font "update 7:27am" that gets me.

Move on Mr Hendry and find us an acceptable addition to the rotation. From what i've read over the past month both on fan sites and through the local press over there the Orioles are run in an even shoddier manner than the cubs. Owners vetoing, cloak and daggers sources etc can we deal with an actual MLB baseball franchise please. I also thought the deal was horrible so if it all just goes away i will settle for Marshall and Gallagher stepping in to the rotation when Dempster and poss Marquis fail.

They jumped the gun two months ago.

Color me corrected. Jeezz I completely forgot about Cano. Cano>Roberts (Younger, better average, more power, cheaper and already on the team).

You win.

I agree with you. If we're going to give up Gallagher and Marshall I would like to see a good pitcher return to us like Burnett.

It might be. But, there's smoke here -- it's not like these are unfounded. The rumors of negotiations have been confirmed on both sides. It's just taking forever.

This could be the longest nontransaction in the transactions thread EVER!

This might be the longest transaction thread ever...it's already a safe distance beyond the Soriano thread. I'm not sure what else currently on the transaction forum (mid 2005 posts and anything more recent) that could top the Soriano thread.
