$19M per year for the back half of the 8-year contract, for a player whose production probably won't even be average for his position.

The average leadoff hitter had a 759 OPS last year, if that stays the average the next 8 years, Soriano has a good chance of remaining average for his position.

I'm pretty sure you're joking, but in case you're not, I'd like to point out that leadoff hitter isn't a position. LF is a position.

Well, then if he does fall below average for leadoff hitters, they can just move him to 7th or 8th, where he'll have a better chance of actually being well above average for his position. Problem solved.

Although I'm just guessing that $19MM per will be somewhat over the average salary for a 7 or 8 hitter.

Inflation will save us

Yes, it's one day closer to being done or not being done. In other words, most of what was published or broadcast yesterday was nonsense. The Cubs would still like Roberts. They are not trading Hill, Pie or Colvin for him. As I said yesterday, they're willing to give up some combination of Gallagher-Marshall-Cedeno for him, and that's it. The names of Hill, Marmol, Pie and Colvin are what the Orioles would be asking for Bedard, and the Cubs aren't in on any Bedard deal.

Thanks, Bruce. Off topic, but have you heard anything about Hendry acquiring another starter or is he content with the rotation as is?

Somebody asked him yesterday if Henry was looking at anybody else to acquire at the moment, and Bruce replied that they liked Lieber.

Ah. Depending on how much he'd take, I'd go for that. I prefer him in the rotation over Dempster.

I HATE HATE HATE THIS THREAD!!! AGGHHHH!!!!

I've considered BRob part of the team for so long that I honestly will feel empty if we do not get him. Hendry has to do something else this offseason doesn't he? Other than trading Jones, acquiring Ascanio, and signing Fukudome, its been pretty much nothing for the Cubs. Not to say that getting Fukudome does nothing, but I expected at least a few smaller moves.

This could be the longest nontransaction in the transactions thread EVER!

This might be the longest transaction thread ever...it's already a safe distance beyond the Soriano thread. I'm not sure what else currently on the transaction forum (mid 2005 posts and anything more recent) that could top the Soriano thread.

It is the longest. Go to a forum page and at the bottom where it says 'Sort By' and instead of 'Post Time', pick 'Replies'. Then make sure it's descending and it will display the threads that have the most replies.

I know, I feel the same way. It's getting on my nerves that the offseason has been desolate for us. Granted, the market is crawling with mediocre players, but something still needs to be done. We may have a playoff caliber team, but I don't think the team as it stands now gets to the World Series.

Mr. Miles,

While you say "the Cubs aren't in on any Bedard deal," are you of the opinion that they should be pursuing him?

Thanks,

Maybe we should have just signed Luis Castillo to play 2B. At least he wouldn't have cost us any talent.

True, but we would have had an older, much less productive player that would have been signed for the next 4 years at over 6 million per year. I'd rather hope to replace the talent and get the player that's far more likely to improve the team.

Do we know that he wouldn't have taken a 2 year $15M deal to come here?

I think the PSD poster may have lost a little bit of prestige, but he posted:

If it's going to take Colvin to get the deal done, he will be involved, but we would get a prospect back. Possibly Radhames Liz.

Yeah..

Fat chance they take that.

Do we know for sure? No, I guess not. I just don't think that a person who signs a 4 year 25 million dollar team for the team who traded for him and has a big hole at second base would willingly sign a 2 year 15 million dollar deal for a different team who has a replacement lined up if Castillo were to slump badly.

Assuming it would have taken 4 years and 25 million is probably being generous. He likely would have required more to come to Chicago.

I think that guy has lost all prestige. He's the only one with absolutely no built up credibility to fall back on, he was way wrong on this one, and his new info is also being refuted by Bruce.

If it takes a name out of Hill, Marmol, Pie and Colvin to land Bedard, why in the world would you not entertain trading Pie or Colvin - since they both can't play centerfield at the same time and our corner outfield spots are locked up for the next 4 years?

It probably takes at least 2 of those names and at least one lesser prospect to land Bedard.
