I've seen you post equally as outrageous things in total seriousness so you'll have to excuse me if I take what you say to mean what you say.

I've been tending to some family-illness issues....

As we debate whether Dawson should be in the hall of fame, the perfect batting order, or whether Roberts is worth a fifth string starter; only one thing matters. OBP.

Seriously though, only one thing matters is the people in our lives. I hope everything is going well.

so, not really even a starter, eh? :-k

Kidding, but I agree with your sentiment. Bruce, I dealt with a similar situation recently. Best wishes to you and your family.

We have elite prospects?

We're very likely to have two prospects in the top 30 in baseball this year.

Just curious, who?

I'd guess Vitters and Colvin.

holy crap, if colvin is considered one of the top 30 prospects then a lot of baseball people are even dumber than i thought.

He's considered top 50, but not top 30.

Interestingly enough, I've heard his skillset likened to Tony Gwynn. I hope you enjoy that laugh as much as I did.

Also note that that's actually less than a half season, since they're Post-ASB numbers. I'm pretty sure they played a bit over 81 games Pre-ASB.

And DLee missed five games because he was suspended for the fight with Chris Young.

DLee hit 16 home runs in 68 games in the 2nd half last year which is a pace of 38 for a full 162 games. If you want to go by PA's, he had 295 in the 2nd half. Outside of 2006 when he was hurt, the fewest PA's he's had since 2002 was 643 which would put him on pace for 35 home runs. It's perfectly conceivable that he could hit 30-35 home runs next year.

I'll probably get flamed for this but here goes.......why is it when i look at other teams trades alot of the time i could see the cubs beating that package or it being a reasonable price to pay for a player. When we are looking at players that you wouldn't class as difference makers the first names that appear in return are Pie/Hill. An example would be if you look at Bedard they would want Hill/Pie which makes no sense as we open up another hole for a player who is 1yr from FA. However if you look at Santana who would clearly be worth Hill/Pie and more (providing he signed an extension) we don't have enough according to various media outlets. So i think to myself which of the following is true.....

1.Our prospects are all crap and we have nothing to trade to get a quality player

2.Other teams inflate the value of thier prospects far better than we do ie New York seems to think Hughes/Melky+1 is the best offer the Twins will get for Santana but what about Hill/Pie and one of Gallagher/Veal/Petrick/Ceda?

3.We hold on to our prospects way to long until they flame out and have little value. The opposite of this would be Detroit who get Cabrera and Willis for 6 prospects. The majority of these combined will never have the benefit for Detroit that Cabrera will provide.

4. We have a useless GM who has no clue how to evaluate talent and run a major league ball club.

Anyway that's my rant out the way! What i'm trying to say is that we never seem to make a clever deal for a player who will significantly improve our ball club. We overpay for the likes of Pierre (Lofton would of done as good a job that year)or we go after players who marginally improve us ie Roberts(i'm yet to read a convinving argument that we will be far better off with Brob at 2B than DeRo)

So Gallagher, Marshall, and Cedeno for Roberts? Thats WAY too much for a guy who we really dont need and isnt much of an upgrade over what we have. Plus hes on "The List". Sure, he says he only smoked it once, but he didnt inhale, or whatever, but still.

If Ronny or either Sean turn out to be anything, this will rank up their with the Swisher deal. Id give them Marshall and Cedeno, and thats more generous than JH should be.

Just wanted to check and see if the trade is still a week away from getting done.

Like the Kobe to the Bulls deal, it's not a matter of "if", but "when".

I love it when De Luca tweaks Rogers.

Wednesday was a wild day for baseball rumors. Bloggers prompted mainstream media outlets -- including one in Chicago -- to announce a Cubs trade with the Orioles all but done, even if the teams hadn't had serious talks in a month.

Yes, the Cubs likely will land second baseman Brian Roberts from the Orioles for a boatload of prospects, but not until the two general managers -- the Cubs' Jim Hendry and the O's Andy MacPhail -- actually hammer out a trade, probably later this month after the Orioles jettison pitcher Erik Bedard.

Such is life for the Cubs, who always seem to have another deal up their sleeve and a fan base willing to believe anything.

Right. Marshall and Cedeno might be enough to net us Julio Franco, if that.

Oops! I still say this in the Orioles "insider" Tony is relying on.

Trade Rumors heat up

By: Tony Pente 1/10/2008

Yesterday we were told by two normally reliable source that the trade of Brian Roberts to the Chicago Cubs was done. After asking two different sources from two different circles of baseball, we were told by both that this was 100 percent correct and done. The Orioles quickly came out and denied the report with Orioles officials calling and e-mailing the Hangout to deny the reports and to say the report was "very inaccurate."

Even after this denial, both sources continued to say their report was accurate, but this morning we hear rumblings that the Orioles and Cubs have pulled that offer off the table and are attempting to add more pieces to the overall trade.

This morning we were told that a contact close to the Mariners front office has said the Mariners have an offer on the table for Bedard that includes outfielder Adam Jones, reliever George Sherrill, and right-handed pitching prospect Christopher Tillman. Although Jones would be the center point of the trade, Tillman is considered a guy with significant upside and Sherrill would help in the pen now.

I realize a lot of people are on an emotional roller coaster this off season with all the rumors, but what's clear is that MacPhail is working hard on a lot of fronts and although a lot of information is getting leaked from various sources, it's apparent that MacPhail is keeping things as close hold as possible while working these deals.

At least it's been an interesting ride so far!

Stay tuned, more information on the way soon.

Gallagher/Marshall/Cedeno is too steep a price. If you take away Roberts' .902 OPS in 2005 his career looks unimpressive. He's been a good basestealer for the past 2 years but that's not nearly enough to make me trade away all our starting pitching depth. Better to let DeRosa play 2B and keep Gallagher and Marshall for insurance in case Dempster and Marquis tank, which is very likely.

Apparently Rosenthal said on the radio last night that he didn't believe that Marshall would be included in a Roberts deal.

According to the guys at OH, Rosenthal was on the radio this morning and said he didn't think Marshall would be part of the deal.

Why is anyone starting a sentence with according to the guys at OH?

They have 0 credibility. They've now been wrong on this trade in every way it can possibly be wrong.
