Great sources have told me that the price for Roberts is much higher than that. Names that the Orioles are reportedly asking for include Rich Hill and several much more highly regarded players that could include Felix Pie, minor league standout outfielder Tyler Colvin, and others.

It's freakout time. I think I just had a heart attack.

This can't be happening.

I rather doubt it is. I think it's just talk.

I don't see what difference it makes to the "source". Only the more than casual Cub fan even cares who the Cubs are sending. Brian Roberts is the only "name" in the deal. The headline will be "Roberts traded to Cubs in a 4 player deal". It would be different if it was a blockbuster consistenting of multiple superstars.

Maybe they want to tell the players themselves, instead of having the media do it.

LOL You can tell who the pessimists are when the outrageously wrong/lopsided rumors come out (i.e. the ones Hendry floats so that the actual trade doesn't look so bad) and they start freaking out.

I will say it right now, there is absolutely no chance that Hill gets traded in a deal for Roberts. The only way something like that would have an iota of a chance of happening would be if it were a package Roberts/Bedard deal.

I know I might be being generous here, but there is no GM that inept.

Why? You seriously think Hendry would do that just for Roberts? Come on...

This can't be happening.

It's not.

Just the fact that MacPhail even mentioned Hill is enough to freak me out. How dare he!

I'm thinking we're being fed misinformation so that MLB can cover up the fact that the deal is done. All of a sudden the Roberts talks flare up again all over the web after the leaks makes me suspicious.

Huh?

Please explain to me why MLB would cover up a trade?

Where's Jim Garrison?

Hendry has said numerous, numerous times this offseason that he's not trading Felix or Hill. I have no reason to doubt him now just because a couple of Baltimore clowns are throwing crap around again.

The only person who has said this is somebody from Chicago, not from Baltimore.

At the same time, I completely agree with you. I think Pie might still have a small possibility of going in another deal, but not this one.

I also think the deal is done. There is too much craziness and misinformation coming out of both camps that if they were still negotiating doesn't come out quite this fast.

No "Baltimore clowns" are throwing crap around. That's our very own Dave Kaplan from WGN making that report.

I thought it was first posted by an "Insider," my mistake.

In this case it was a Chicago clown, same difference.

Sportscentral starts in about 30 minutes on WGN radio. We'll get a chance to hear first hand what Kaplan has to say about this purposed deal. I don't believe the Hill and Pie rumor.

We have elite prospects?

We're very likely to have two prospects in the top 30 in baseball this year.

I've been tending to some family-illness issues, but here are a few thoughts some info on what I've been told:

First, Hendry doesn't "float" rumors and neither does MacPhail. I can see MacPhail hating how this is playing out, and I'm sure he'll put it on his to-do list to stop leaks like this.

Second, the Orioles might be asking for Hill and Pie and whomever, but they will not get them. Hendry absolutely will not trade them for Roberts. Period. A package that includes parts of Gallagher, Marshall and/or Cedeno is what the Cubs have in mind.

Third, from what I've been told today and earlier this week, nothing is imminent. The Cubs would like Roberts, but if the O's decide to move him, it's 50-50 the Cubs will get him.

Fourth, the writer Peter Schmuck was mentioned above. This guy is good. He's a former Orioles beat writer who is very plugged in there. If he says it's 70 percent Roberts won't be moved, I'd tend to go with that. But that doesn't mean things won't change.

Fifth, I'm told MacPhail's first order of business will be trade Bedard (no, the Cubs are not in on this). Once that get settled, then he'll turn his attention to Roberts.

This is Goose Gossage Day. It's disrespectful to bury Gossage and his election into the Baseball Hall of Fame announcement in the back pages of every major newspaper's sports section by making trades and conducting business as usual.

I happen to think there is a trade already in place as well. I think any hold up might be because of the HOF announcement, 40 man roster issues and/or other trades that are being held up because they are semi-related.

Maybe its just me, but I don't think a Brian Roberts trade would generate a huge amount of press outside Baltimore and Chicago. Also, I think the Gossage story is already headed to the back pages anyway.

I understand wanting the HOF elections to be the news, similar to the lockdown on news during the World Series. I don't think anything is done. Some of these guy may have some "sources", but I'm not betting anything on it either.

I'd guess Vitters and Colvin.

Thanks Bruce! Any ideas on what their plan is if Marquis and/or Dempster "crap the bed" so to speak?

I hop all is well with your family.

I'm not arguing whether a Brian Roberts trade is or isn't a bigger sports story than a HOF announcement because it doesn't matter what news is more significant. I think it's a somewhat unwritten rule (or even a written rule to all MLB sports teams from the commissioner of baseball) that you don't disrupt a significant MLB announcement with business as usual dealings.

It's sort of memorium to pay respects. It's disrespectful to overshadow a major announcement.

But, I could be way off base. I don't know. I'm not an insider. :D

Thanks for the update, Bruce. I was kidding about Hendry floating false rumors to make himself look good when he got ripped off, BTW.

I, too, hope all is well with the family.

A-Rod and Boras didn't get the memo.
