That Orioles site is ridiculous.

Now their excuse is the Goose Gossage thing. As if MLB would be so concerned that a mega-super-blockbuster trade of Brian Roberts would totally overshadow Gossage's election. I can see it (maybe) if there was a three-team deal that involved Jake Peavy, Johan Santana and David Wright, but a Roberts trade isn't going to overshadow a HoF vote.

They're all just throwing things around at this point. It's silly.

I wouldn't really call it an excuse. The trade hasn't been approved yet by MLB and thus can't be announced. The denial by MacPhail follows. If we're truly getting inside information (which, I guess, remains to be seen), we're getting information before it's officially announced. I'm not sure what's so out of line there.

I do agree that thinking the Gossage thing comes into play is a stretch, though.

Honestly, I half expect that this means that Samardzija will be getting a handful of starts this year.

"How do you half-expect something?"

the same way you have "half a mind" to do something

I think it is closer to doing something half-assed. Like starting Samardzija if he isn't ready.

"It's just a turn of phrase."

Someone made a great point at OH: the O's 40 man needs to be reduced before this deal with the Cubs can be finalized. It's very possible that the O's are working with another team, on a separate deal, that moves some players. One of their Insiders mentioned that they will be trading pitching soon (Bedard is assumed). Perhaps there will be an exchange of player that makes room on the roster. Or it could be a small transaction that makes room on the 40-man.

I think if the trade actually happens, no one should post about it. We should just leave what will probably be 100+ pages of speculation alone.

Some of the angst surrounding trading both Marshall and Gallagher (which has yet to be seen) is based on the idea that the Cubs would be left thin in the starting rotation. It doesn't take into consideration that the Cubs may acquire a quality starter that makes Marquis a decent fifth starter option. As stated earlier, if the Cubs start the season with Marquis and Dempster in the rotation I will be disappointed but I'm trying to not get upset until I see how this offseason ends...

BTW, Mike Murphy will have some guy on from the Baltimore Sun soon. Listen live

The guy probably won't be able to verify anything but it might be a good listen.

Nah, after page 100 the real freak out begins.

How many of these will there be?:

"How did we get to 100 pages about a Brian Roberts trade that hasn't happened yet?"

90 pages on the potential of a Brian Roberts trade that may or may not happen, compared to the 9 pages of the NBA for the entire season. Man the NBA sucks.

Nah, the answer is pretty obvious: This has been the slowest offseason ever. We have nothing else to talk about.

If we have enough prospects to do this after the Roberts deal, I will be very happy.

How many of those pages were about improving on Theriot, getting Bedard, trading Pie...etc...

Edit: How many pages were about how many pages this thread is?

There are rumors that ML players could be used to acquire a starter (or at least be the center piece). The AJ Burnett talk mentions DeRosa and Dempster (and perhaps others). The Cubs have parts to trade however, some of the trades could leave them thin against injury and or ineffectiveness.

I'm sure SecondCityHoops has a 90+ page thread about Gasol/McGrady to Bulls trade rumors. Oh wait...
