I wouldn't say that. It's not just jabber. Those insiders are legit.

Nobody ever said the Roberts deal was going to happen quick. The groundwork was laid at the winter meetings. MacPhail still has other fish to fry first.

The nice thing is that if Bedard nets them Adam Jones, they really don't have a need for Pie.

Which makes something like Gallagher/EPatt/Veal/mid-level prospect more of a possibility and something I could easily deal with.

A sharp poster at BleacherBums made an interesting point. Baltimore picked up 4 40-man guys for Tejada. If they are going to trade both Bedard and Roberts, each for multiple prospects, they may experience some severe 40-man roster crunch. If they took 3 40-man guys from Cubs for Roberts, and 3 or more for Bedard, that could be like adding 10 or more 40-man prospects to replace three guys out. It may be that their farm is so lousy that they could accomodate that.

But they might have reason to prefer a prospect or two who wouldn't be 40-man necessary yet. Perhaps they'd like a guy like Veal more than we might expect on that basis. Or perhaps if they scout Pie and Colvin as comparable, maybe Colvin's non-40 status would be a mark, even if only a modest one, in his favor.

"Legit" doesn't mean we should take it to mean it'll happen either though. Earlier in the offseason, the hangouters' "insiders" were confident Tejada was going to be traded for Pie amongst others. Then the Roberts deal is Pie&Gallagher, then definitely Pie then Bedard is included and the O's get everybody, then it's just Brian again and for Gallagher. I don't think Pie is being traded. I believe this, my "insiders" have said this and I believe the board's "insiders" have corroborated it as well, yes? So I think it comes down to: Cubs are interested in Roberts. They think the O's would want the Cubs top 2 guys. Imagine that. Not really anything we don't know. I say with a good amount of confidence that Pie is not going anywhere. I don't really know how Hendry would feel about dealing Colvin until Pie shows he'll stick, either.

On another note, would there be any reluctance to trade, or trade for, Veal right after his parent's death?

I posted a link to the main page, re: Roberts admits to steroid use in 2003. Does his trade value now get more reasonable? Do the Cubs want him? Hendry has always made a big deal out of pursuing "character guys", so I wonder whether the Cubs' interest will cool somewhat.

I can certainly live with another year of DeRosa at 2B no problem....Let's trade for Bedard instead.

I don't think this changes anything from Hendry's side. The asking price might go down slightly, though.

Yeah, but even if they are legit, a message board is where you come to post stuff that really isn't all that solid. Otherwise it starts showing up in print.

I know you're correct, it wasn't ever going to necessarily be quick.

As a man who made his money as a defense lawyer and representing labor, it's hard to determine how Angelos will react to Roberts' perhaps unnecessary admission. Angelos was the lone owner to speak out against the Mitchell report. It's possible he could feel betrayed by Roberts validating the report. It's possible he could feel more attached to the player's "integrity". I wouldn't count on this lowering his price though.

They were talking about Bedard on Orioles hangout and one of the insiders chimed in saying that he's still hearing Roberts to Cubs soon...asked if it would be today he said:

More like this week. Peace and Belkast are checking with their contacts. I was told it was Gallagher, Murton and Patterson but who knows???

In the unlikely event that we're able to pull off that deal for that package, I will voluntarily go on a one month Jim Hendry criticism embargo.

I won't claim to be a genius about these matters, but if that is true, would it be possible to add, say, Pie and Marshall and get Bedard added to that? Don't jump on my head, just wondering if those five could get Bedard and Roberts, or is that out of the question.

I'm just thinking that Z, Lilly, Hill and Bedard looks like a good first four of the rotation, and get Kenny Lofton for the year.

Roberts isn't a horrible acquisition, and although it doesn't really address a need, at least they're getting a guy that doesn't suck, which is a step up for Hendry. Beats Neifi or Macias.

That's not a light package. Murton is the Cubs 3rd best OF at this point and best RH bat not being paid at least 12M for this season. Gallagher may be the Cubs 5th best starter. Patterson, admittedly, doesn't have much value unless he can handle 2B adequately. Not saying that it's too much, but it's far from robbery.

Roberts for two seasons at a very friendly price, then let him walk for two high draft choices. An excellent deal. I like Sean Gallagher, but a good farm system should be able to pop out a Gallagher every couple of seasons.

Roberts seems like the type to accept arbitration, being that he won't get much of a raise if he hits the market, so I don't know that you can count on those picks, even if he is a type A.

And yeah, I'd do the deal, but it's a far cry from the Aramis trade. Thankfully it's a far cry from the Pierre trade too.

Unless Roberts is horrible as a Cub over the next two seasons, there's essentially zero chance he would accept an offer of arbitration.

That's a trade I wouldn't mind pulling the trigger on. Murton would be a shame to give up, but Patterson isn't gonna get any lage amount of playing time on the Cubs anytime soon. Gallagher may turn out to be decent, but he isn't a can't miss prospect, and most scouts have him projected as a 3-4 starter anyway.

Murton isn't a shame to give up at this point. There us no spot for him in the immediate future. Get something for him.

Yeah, even if he isn't able to secure a significant per season raise with a new contract, he's not going to choose to play on a one year deal at age 32, when he could sign a 3-5 year contract that guarantees him so much more money.

I must be once again thinking of a different Brian Roberts. Giving up Murton, Gallagher, and Patterson for a MARGINAL upgrade over status quo?

Jim Hendry will tell you it makes our team a lot better, because it gives us depth with DeRosa able to play 2B, RF, maybe SS, 1B, 3B with a decent OPS when others need a day off.

If Derosa could just play an avg. at best everyday SS things would be great.
