Buster Onley is saying that the Twins and the Cards are talking about Rolen to Minnesota. Hopefully we could get back Garza but I doubt it, so hopefully Slowery.

No way Minnesota would give up Garza for Rolen. Rolen's shoulder is shot at this point, and his numbers have been in decline for the past couple of years. He's not the same player he was a few years ago.

To get back Garza I would think that the Cardinals would need to pay for all of Rolen's contract and all of Santana's future contract. Rolen's done, and he doesn't even have some lingering good performance from last year to keep his trade value up. It'd be a salary dump if they got rid of him.

I think if Rolan can still swing a bat without it hurting his shoulder he would make a stellar firstbaseman. I understand it decreases his value but I think that's where he might have to go if these shoulder problems continue.

I really hope the Cards can't find a taker for Rolen. I like Rolen, and it sucks that he'd be stuck in a miserable situation, but he's definitely not worth the money he's being paid, and I'd like the Cards to be the one that suffers because of it.

Rotoworld:

Scott Rolen-3B-Cardinals Nov. 8 - 4:41 pm et

Two Twins officials told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that there's no truth to the rumor that Minnesota and St. Louis have discussed a Scott Rolen deal.

There are some teams that could, but the Twins can't gamble $11.8 million per year for the next three seasons on Rolen's health. They'll search for a cheaper solution at third base.

Could be just GM talk, but it really doesn't make much sense for the Twins anyway unless the the Cardinals are picking up a hefty portion over the next 3 years.

It's his hitting, not defense, that's the problem. Moving him to first would be nuts.

That was my question, is it hitting when he has pain or throwing?

It's the left shoulder I believe so the problem is with swinging the bat. He's still a well above average 3rd baseman.

Rolen is still good defensivley. However the cards will be stuck with him, unless they are willing to take a lot of the money. I heard as much as 18 of the 36 he is owed. Rolen is worth 6, if that turns out to be true. Otherwise He is stuck in St Louis, because they have no young pitcher to make the Beckett/ Lowell type of trade.

Apparently the Cardinals have lost their mind. This is from Jasyon Starks column

"They're not picking up one penny of the [$36 million left on the] contract," says one executive who spoke with them. "And let's just say they're not giving him away."

Also this

Rolen probably would have wound up with the Yankees if A-Rod hadn't had Warren Buffett's cell number. But the Cardinals apparently were insisting on Those Young Guys the Yankees Won't Trade (Chamberlain, Phil Hughes, Ian Kennedy). So that conversation never made it past the back burner.

The Cardinals need to realize this isnt Rolen from 5-8 years ago. Hes a past his prime, injured 3rd baseman.

I cant imagine that a team thats in the very beginning of a rebuilding process would have much interest in a player as broken down as Rolen. I doubt that they consider themselves contenders with Cleveland, Detroit, and even the Sox, so theres no logic behind them going after a rent-a-player.

If Rolen were free it would make sense as even with a bad shoulder he may still be as good a hitter as Hunter this season. I think the Cards talking about not giving him away is a smokescreen/ PR move. The new GM probably doesn't want his 1st big transaction to be paying Rolen to leave town. Thus they have to make it sound like they held out for the best deal possible.

I trust that at some point the Twins will review Rolen's medical status, which will instantly reveal he's a crippled player who won't be providing anywhere near the level of production he once did.

Think Bagwell after the shoulder degenerated. That's basically Rolen now.

He was worth more than $12M two years ago.

There's probably something to that (keeping the price high until Lowell et al are off the market), but also the Cards aren't exactly hurting for cash. If someone like the Twins is willing to pick up half the tab, it's probably worth it to the Cardinals to just cross their fingers on the one-in-whatever chance that he rebounds. If he hits .272/.342/.437 (avg 3B) and plays +20 defense that's going to be better than whatever the alternatives are at this point (and worth 12 million a year). The medical reports are supposedly good this offseason, but that could obviously be the same sort of posturing.

I guess they could pick up half his contract and then pay millions of dollars for Pedro Feliz, who represents his downside. If I were a Cubs fan, I'd hope the Cardinals absorbed a large chunk of his contract and moved him, rather than hang on to him.

The fact is, there are teams that know they arent contenders. Royals, D-Rays, Pirates, etc. The Twins are about to enter that realm, especially if they move Santana, in which case going after a guy like Rolen, who would be a short term answer would be pointless to them, especially when theyd be better off developing and trading for young players. Its worked wonders for Detroit and Cleveland.

ha...the Twins will never enter the realm of Royals, D-Rays, Pirates.
