OU up early at home against Baylor tonight. A win makes us 18-8 with five regular season games to go. I'm thinking we win tonight, go 3-2 down the stretch, win one in the Big12 tourney and go into the NCAAs as an 8 seed.

Regardless of Sampson and his situation, IU has looked very good lately.

I have no idea when this team learned to play defense, but that has been the big key in their transformation. The last 4 games have been a lot better than they have played the rest of the season.

Purdue's aggressive defense had its benefits and faults tonight. They caused a lot of turnovers, but they also gambled and lost quite a bit which led to easy buckets and foul trips for IU.

True. Now let's get his rear end off the bench and into suspension land....or fire him now. I'm good either way.

I feel like this is a play-in for these two teams. Whoever loses is probably out of the tourney barring something crazy. The winner would still have work to do, but they'd have a shot.

I am really getting sick of UConn playing like crap for 32 minutes, waking up for the last 8 and winning the game. They did it against USF and they did it tonight against DePaul. I guess I shouldn't talk considering ND's lucky escapes from Providence and Rutgers, but I would love a Big East title more than I can possibly put into words, and all these teams tied with us coming tantalizingly close to losing is making me crazy.

Well...it's DePaul and USF. Just look who's coaching those teams and you'll see why they can't win close games.

If OU blows thiss tonight (a distinct possibility), a good big 12 tourney gets them in. But tonight simplifies things greatly.

Wow! What a game. Knocked down our FTs. We are playing our best stretch of basketball and I think the Sampson situation has taken a not-so focused team and allowed them to focus on just playing the game the way their talent allows. For as much as I've heard (haven't seen PU much) about the pressure D, our turnovers weren't really forced for the most part. DJ White made a difference inside, but not actually as much as I thought. Armon Bassett was amazing, with a career high 8 boards at 6'1" and 16 big points. Taber gave us some great minutes. Good win all around.

Kinda off topic, but someone posted this in the KU board I visit:

League Leaders in Big 12 wins:

1. Rick Barnes - 116

2. Bill Self - 60

3. Scott Drew - 17

4. Jeff Capel - 11

5. Mike Anderson - 11

Things look pretty bleak in the Big XII hoops-wise. Massive turnover in coaches, and virtually no marquee names replacing them. Sutton might be gone soon, too, and who knows how long Pat Knight will last. Scott Drew might bail at the first better job. I'd love for the conference to become a legit hoops power, but I don't like what I'm seeing.

KU and Texas will always be at the top.

Outside of that, I don't think the league ever gets beyond where it is now, where everyone else is just decent outside of small stretch every once in awhile. Like the Hollis Price Sooners or Kareem Rush Missouri Tigers.

Kansas and Texas just have huge built in recruiting advantages. KU with its California pipeline (to be honest, I'm not real sure if it exists like it used to) and Texas by playing in a state the size of a medium-sized country.

It was a great game. If IU doesn't make bad decisions with the ball, this one isn't even close. That's not saying Purdue didn't play good defense; they did. IU really didn't take care of the ball, and that hurt them a lot. IU also played with incredible defensive pressure, and I thought (for Big Ten refs) it wasn't an exquisitely awful officiating job. One other IU-centered observation: I think you saw exactly how important Bassett is to this team when he went to the bench with about 7 minutes left. IU's offense went cold, looked like they didn't know what they were doing and, magically, Purdue's offense starting clicking on relatively easy drives into the lane. Bassett is a very good defender, and his ball-handling ability is by far the best on the team. When Bassett returned as Purdue drew within 5 points, IU shut Purdue down and ended the game.

I was also impressed with Purdue tonight. I've been saying all season that they are a good team, and I think they played very well, all in all. The standings with IU, Purdue and Wisconsin all tied at the top is, I believe, appropriate. These three teams are the class of the conference, with MSU right behind and OSU following a step behind MSU.

Looking ahead at the contender's schedules:

IU -- @NU, OSU, @MSU, MIN, @PSU

PU -- MIN, NU, @OSU, UM

UW -- @ILL, @OSU, MSU, PSU, @NU

MSU -- IA, @WIS, IU, @ILL, @OSU

Michigan St. plays both IU and Wisconsin and has the toughest schedule; Ohio St. plays all four contenders and will be a real factor in who wins the Big Ten. Purdue probably has the easiest schedule, though playing at Ohio St. won't be a picnic. Other than @MSU, I don't think IU will be close to losing a game. I could easily see a three-way tie atop the Big Ten going into the tournament.

The KU pipeline to CA doesn't exist like it did in the Pierce days, but it doesn't need to. Roy wouldn't recruit east of Chicago. He claimed there were "too many good programs to fly over" to get to KU, so he built that pipe. The real reason was he probably didn't want to compete with his beloved Dean/UNC. Self will go anywhere for players.

I think with the right coach, OU, OSU, and Mizzou could be long-term quality programs. They were certainly good back in the Stewart/Billy Tubbs years.

Sounds like the OU/Baylor game got chippy.

McDonald's All-American rosters are out. North Carolina is the only school with 3 kids (F Ed Davis, C Tyler Zeller and G Larry Drew). Ohio St (G William Buford and C BJ Mullens) and UCLA (Gs Jrue Holiday and Malcolm Lee) are the only two schools with 2 kids.

funny, i thought McDonalds just looked at the Duke recruiting class and named THEM the All-Americans

It's been physical the whole time, and Blake caught an intentional elbow when he basically sat on a kid during a loose-ball scramble.

I like to think that OU and OSU (though not lately, at all) are longterm quality programs. But there's a difference between consistently being a top-25 team and being a national title contender, and it's hard to do that when you basically only recruit the Oklahoma kids that don't bounce to bigger programs (JR Giddens, Shelden Williams, Kelenna Azuibuke, Xavier Henry) and the Texas leftovers.

Though, before Sampson bounced, Damion James and Scottie Reynolds were both OU commits. Can you imagine a team with Reynolds, Crocker/Godbold, James, Blake and Longar? That's a top 5 team.

That team would've been sick. Maybe I'm just looking too closely at this year where OSU and OU aren't up to their usual snuff. Those teams have to be good for the Big XII to be good, because Nebraska, ISU, and CU are pretty much dead weight. (Though I do have some hopes for Sadler and Bdzelik). I'm very worried about the Sean Sutton thing, though. I think he could run that program into the ground if he's around too long.

And, God, do I want Xavier Henry.

I've seen Henry play, he'll probably be unstoppable in college. He plays against such a high level of talent during AAU ball that it's going to be easier for him once he gets into college.

PS

just like I said, OU is about to blow this game. We need at least 2 wins in the tourney (or a road win at Texas) to make the NCAAs now.
