I fully admit my biases, but a "tighter leash" and a scholly reduction seems like nothing to me. IU already was short a scholly for next year because Bud Mackey was on crack. A tighter leash was supposedly already on Sampson since he had violations at OU. Samspon violated those terms and you just are going to tighten the leash again?

Fool me once...

This is a very, very tricky situation for the NCAA.

1) The original penalties were too harsh. Even for the amount of violation, it was still a violation that is of the type that is self-reported by programs all the time. Sampson should have received penalties, there's no doubt about that. The NCAA hit him as hard as they did though because of him being the head of the Ethics Committee at the time in order to set an example to all the other coaches out there to not do it again. All the major sanctions were against him personally and not the school for precisely that reason.

2) Sampson didn't re-break NCAA rules. What he did was break the terms of his sanctions (and Senderhoff did break some of the rules again, but he's already out the door). This is very unusual because Sampson's sanctions to begin with were very unusual. At the same time, he did willingly break the sanctions, and that has to be looked at very badly by the NCAA.

So now the NCAA has a problem. They have to make it worse than it was before. However, because they pushed too hard the first time, they don't have very far to go. A postseason ban seems extreme because that is saved for the worst of violations (openly paying players, changing grades, etc.) If you steal twice, they don't give you the worst punishment out there. They just give a worse punishment then there was before.

Indiana has already put down the loss of the scholarship, heavy recruiting restrictions, and the loss of 500,000. Indiana if you'll notice what they say in the report says they purposely made the penalties worse than the violation really is in order to show the NCAA they are working in good faith.

The NCAA may agree with that, but if they don't a very interesting precedent will be set for future coaches. Make the same mistake twice, no matter how minor the violation, and your school could be set back for years. Maybe the NCAA wants to send that message, I don't know. That's the message they'll send though, and that's a dangerous one because a normal Division 1 program will have around 20 violations of NCAA rules per year.

Mizzou suspends Leo Lyons, Marshall Brown, Butterfield and Jason Horton according to another site I visit. If true, that means including Hannah, they're down 5 players going into the Nebraska game. Looks like the Huskers might get their first conference win.

Nice to see Anderson stepping up and doing what's right. Get those thugs the hell out of Columbia. What an embarrassment to the University, and what a complete mess that the MU basketball program is. So freaking frustrating.

So that leaves

Carroll

Safford

M Lawrence

Tiller

K Lawrence

Volkus

as the rotation? Oh wow, Anderson Jr. and Berardini are going to get significant minutes aren't they. This is going to be so much of a disaster that now I'm mildly disappointed I won't be able to be there.

what a weird game. nearly 1/2 way through the 2nd half and not a single free throw shot since halftime. nothing but turnovers and chucked up three's on both sides

That game is going to put a whole new meaning on the phrase "40 minutes of hell."

Too bad SIU can't play Evansville every game this year. 59-39 win over the Aces puts us over .500 for the first time since we started 4-3.

If we can beat Northern Iowa on the road on Saturday, we have a good chance at having an extended winning streak.

We interrupt this thread on really boring Big 10 and Mid Major teams to bring you the following report:

Tennessee gets their first win in Tuscaloosa in 10 years. And, don't look now, but Chris Lofton finally looks like Chris Lofton.

We now return you to your discussion on really boring, subpar basketball teams. (Kansas and UCLA excluded.)

Gotta admit, I love watching UT play. Probably the most fun team to watch in all of college basketball.

Why are people surprised that most of the college basketball talk centers around the Big Ten, Southern Illinois, Depaul, etc? It's a Cubs/Chicago board.

Yea the bitching about "omg more Big Ten, IU/UI, etc...." talk is ignorant. The board is made up mostly of people with Illinois roots, or ties to Illinois, hence there likeing of the Cubs. So more than likely those same people are probably going to be fans of a school in IL or the surrounding states, which the majority of them are from the Big Ten, its amazing how that works huh. I bet if you go to the Cardinals board you would find more talk of Memphis, Tenn, Univ. of Stl, etc...

But you can never have enough bitching about the Big Ten or their "terrible" teams from those allmighty powerhouse kickass schools in the greatest conference to ever be made up in college sports, the SEC. Maybe we should just give the SEC their own thread since they are the kings of college sports and shouldnt have to be dirtied up by posts surrounded by the Big Ten.
