Reds Hire Dusty Baker

I really can't think of a worse team for Dusty to manage. They have young players that need to play, but also crappy players that could be playing over them. With arguably the greatest concentration of high end talent (Bailey, Votto, Bruce, Cueto) they just hired the opposite of the kind of manager they need.

 

It all depends on if the Reds GM lets Dusty call the shots like Hendry did. Would Neifi, Bynum, Macias, etc have been around nearly as long as they were if they weren't Dusty's pets?

 

Although I blame Hendry just as much there for giving Dusty these toys knowing what he'd do with them.

Speaking as a Cubs fan, I think Dusty is a perfect fit for the Reds. He would have been a great fit for any NL Central team, though his talents would have been wasted in Pittsburgh.

Also, the best part of this is; you know somewhere out there, there is some poor sap reds fan who actually is really excited about this because Dusty is a "big name" manager. Outstanding.

Except Harang is nowhere near as much of a girl as Prior, and has already had seasons of throwing tons of pitches on his arm.

 

Besides that, it will be the same.

The worst part about this hiring is that we will actually lose games to a team managed by Dusty Baker. And that will be painful.

Dusty becomes the first former Cubs manager to get another head job in goodness knows how long.

 

The last Cubs manager to complete an entire season with another team was Jim Marshall who managed the Athletics for ONE season in 1979.

 

You have to go back to Bob Scheffing, who managed us in 1959, to find a manager who managed at least two full seasons after his stint with the Cubs (Detroit '61, '62).

That really sucks for the Reds. We saw what the Milwaukee Brewers did by building thru the farm system and having them all come up and have the opportunity to play together. Bruce and Votto to go along with Griffey, Phillips, Keppinger, and Encarnacion is a lot of offensive talent in a very hitter friendly park. Harang, Bailey and Cueto is enough pitching talent to shut down the opposition even in GABP.

 

Really interested to see Dusty's coaching staff.

Who's gonna be responsible for whether Bruce makes the team out of ST? Same with Votto.

 

Tampa spent big money on Piniella a few years back, and that was it when it came to spending money. I don't expect Cincy to make a big splash money wise, and if they do, who's it gonna be on? Another OF? The free agent market(as usual) sucks this year.
