A season that has taken a toll on Cliff Floyd like no other in his career might be his last, the Chicago Cubs outfielder said Thursday – especially, believe it or not, if the Cubs do the unthinkable and win the World Series.

If they win it all, they can re-sign Floyd to a 5yr-$100 million contract for all I care. Hell, they can sign him to a lifetime contract if he actually does something to contribute to that WS victory...

But I'd still rather have him retire.

I hope you all are joking because the Cubs need Floyd to win this thing. I'm not saying as a full time starter but if he gets hot at this particular time I will be very pleased.

Where did anyone say anything other than that?

Hmm, I don't know. I just assumed that the previous posts wanted him to fail or get him out of baseball and I read what I wanted to read I suppose. I was wrong thinking that.

If we're to win it...we need major contributions from a lot of people like Floyd....and Jones...and Murton....and DeRosa...and Theriot....and maybe even...gasp...Kendall....

World Series are rarely won solely by the big name players having big series...its getting guys like Yadi Molina to go crazy with the bat...or having Craig Counsel get clutch hits...or Juan Pierre get on base....

I think if we get to the Playoffs Lee, Ramirez and Soriano will be important...but it usually seems, to me, that the role players play a much bigger "role" in the post season.

No one said anything about him retiring DURING the year, they mean after the year.

Floyd is definitely capable of getting red hot over the next 6 weeks, but regardless of how he ends, there's no way the Cubs should consider bringing him back.

yeah but he has 2 homers in like 3 days... if he hits a couple more the cubs will say "look, he has something left in the tank after all!" and offer him a two-year deal

Definitely true. Floyd's hot streak might mean that he has earned his 3 million for this year. It's pretty obvious he's fading though, and the Cubs cannot give a spot to him next year.

Agreed, but I hope he starts freakin pounding the ball in the interim.

I don't exactly see what the big gripe with Floyd is. Granted, he's gotten older and it's shown, especially on defense. But we didn't sign him to a contract to be an everyday OF'er. And for the $$ we gave him, this is what he's done for us this year...

38 Runs

42 RBI

Aside from the lack of pop, those #'s aren't too shabby. I can think of many previous Cub players making the $$ we gave him that didn't produce even close to that level.

Of course you ommitted his 412 SLG. Thats 24 points higher than Juan Pierre last year. Now do you see?

Plus his BABIP is .326, after posting .313, .279 and .269 the past three years. Floyd isn't exactly Ichiro when it comes to running from home to first, so his high BA and OBP is significantly due to good luck on balls in play. If his luck were average this year, he'd have been really terrible as opposed to just pretty bad.

Sure is funny that when healthy, hes been the everyday RF. He hasnt shown any pop at all this year(minus the last 2 days, and his foul balls) and this all while hitting 4th and 5th.
