Does anyone really think that a well ran organization has both Mamrol and Dempster on their team, yet lets Dempster close?

Seriously?

Would you really rather waste Marmol's amazing effectiveness on coming in for the 9th inning with a lead and nobody on?

I know I'd rather use him in the situations he is already being used in.

So Anaheim is screwing up by not having KRod in middle relief?

This team is a waste of time.

Even if we make the playoffs somehow, it doesn't matter. No chance to win in October, no plan for the future, no more prospects, no idea how to use them anyhow, and no sale until long after the winter meetings.

Enjoy the 2008 Cubs, same as the 2007 Cubs, but older and worse.

Good one today Cubs. I'm not sure the Cards or Brewers will ever lose again, so good luck.

The Brewers' next ten games are against the Pirates and Reds.

This season is OVER.

13 of the Brewers' next 16 games are on the road where they've shown the ability to lose to just about anybody. It's not over.

don't remember the last time pie got a hit

I think it's been like 3 months.

I saw him get a hit up the middle just the other day.

It was your imagination.

Dempster's been great. This was overdue.

It just blows it had to come in a game like this.

Yep, he's done a good job this year. Now it's up to his teammates to pick him up and score some runs in the 9th.

Dempster - ERA after today 3.5+. SOs/IPs = 48/55

Marmol ERA 1.45. 77/56

Saves are misleading. Dempster gets hit hard and doesn't strike out enough guys to be a good closer which is why he is constantly in trouble even when he does get lucky saves.

Lucky saves? Is this a stat?

Yes, 25 saves with a 3.5 ERA.

Let's see-the Tigers with Jones and Zumaya last year?

I know. We still have to play the Padres, Mets, Phillies, D'Backs...

Nevermind. We play the Pirates and Reds too.

Stop with these facts you keep spewing out. They're clouding my bad judgement.

Yeah the Tigers are well ran. Remember when they traded for Neifi Perez? The other day I went to watch them play the Royals and their other Perez hit 3rd.

Well that sucked, but eventually a closer will blow a save.

NO! WE NEED MARMOL! 25/28 ISN'T GOOD ENOUGH. MARMOL WOULD NEVER, EVER BLOW A SAVE!

LOL! People need to get a grip.

I don't even want to get into the whole closer debate...but IMO the need for a "closer" is vastly overrated and teams throughout baseball are wasting their best relievers in situations that are relatively easy.

If you know you're going to encounter both of the following situations in a game, and you have a pitcher like KRod, Wagner, or Marmol at your disposal, would you rather use him in..

A) 8th inning, men on 1st and 2nd, no outs, tie game

or

B) 9th inning, nobody on, nobody out, 2 run lead

If you can get past the conventional wisdom, the answer is fairly obvious to me...

The Cubs play 5 games left against teams over .500.

The Brewers still have 11 games left against teams over .500.

The season is far from over.

the tigers last year with Zumaya and an even crappier closer in Todd Jones. you know, the team that won the AL.

While I completely agree that saves are misleading, to say that Dempster gets hit hard is inaccurate. Coming into this game, opponent have put up a line of .197/.296/.275 against Dempster this season.

Lets compare his ERA to others in the weak Central division.

Marmol - 1.45

Izzy - 1.77

Lidge - 2.97

Cordero - 2.96

Eventually all those line smashes against him start to fall in.

It maybe, but that said a loss like this one hurts a lot more. If you lose the game in the 7th, sure it is still a loss, but it doesn't have the same effect on a ball club that one like this does.

Well, what organizations are well run? The Braves had Wickman as their closer role for most of the year, and they would have kept him there if he hadn't refused to come in during non-save situations as well.

Because they have spent big money on talent, not because they are a well ran organization. Hell the way they have handled Andrew Miller could set him back a few years.

Cubs record against the Pirates: 4-5

Yeah, that's a playoff team right there, folks.

You should change your name to Pollyanna. It would suit you.

Yeah, all of our remaining games against the Pirates and Reds will make it impossible to beat them. Oh, and I forgot the Brewers great road record too...Man, we're toast!

I would say the well ran teams are Minnesota, Boston, Atlanta, St. Louis, Oakland, and Anaheim.

I like that we play the Pirates, but I am also afraid knowing that we will face Gorzelanny and Maholm.

I don't know about you, but I'm scared of facing the Reds. They seem to have our number.

Cards face Webb tomorrow and the Brewers are terrible on the road. We'll get that game back tomorrow. I still say we win this division by 3 games.
