2-4 with a homer, walk, lineout to third, runner caught stealing. And he very nearly picked a guy off first with a perfect snap throw - Kendall sure as crap can't make that throw.

.400/.447/.771 in 35 ABs with the big club, and I think we all know what kind of numbers he put up in Iowa.

35 plate appearances, as many Home Runs as Jason Kendall in several hundred.

Screw you, Hendry. We had our catcher already here.

I guess the good part about Soto continuing to rake and show good defensive abilities is that I'm actually starting to believe Hendry and Lou would be comfortable heading into 2008 with Geo penciled in as the starter.

i almost know Lou would. it's convincing Hendry not to sign Kendall to an extension that is the hard part

Soto needs to sponsor something. Giovanni's Pizza or Aqua De Gio...

They should just bring Geo's back. He'd get them to sell this time around.

Soto stud. Good to hear Lou say its becoming very hard to come to the park and make out the lineup card and not put him in it. Lets hope he just keeps putting him in there, he is by far, heads and shoulders better than kendall

The offensive power advantage over Kendall is wonderful, but the defensive ability to throw out runners should make it a no-brainer to continue starting him.

as i said in the game thread, soto offers power potential and the ability to lift the ball, whereas kendall slaps hits around the park. When the wind is blowing out, you HAVE to take advantage of Soto's power by having him in the lineup. This goes for the playoffs too, Mr. Piniella.

edit - knock on wood about the playoffs thingy

If he's ready to accept such a role, I have no problem bringing back Kendall as Soto's backup. Good insurance policy in case something happens to the kid or he regresses. If Hendry tells Kendall up-front he's being signed as a backup and pinch hitter, will start around 40 games or so max, and Kendall is OK with that--then re-sign him, sure.

Kendall has no pop and a lousy arm. But, he calls a good game, and he can still get on base just fine. Makes contact, good eye, a fine #7 or #8 hitter in a lineup. And you certainly don't want Soto to get overused like the Dodgers have done with Russel Martin.

Kendall 1-year deal, $1.5MM or so? I'm in.

what are we doing with Blanco and his atrocious $2.8M (essentially $3.1M once you include the buyout) contract?

I don't know, but do you have a healthy veteran player who you simply bench for all of September and then bring him back the next year? I would be surprised by that, but then again the other options are not all that likely either (cut-possible, trade-no, retire-probably most probable)

I'm sure some team would gladly take Blanco off of the Cubs hands. He is still known as a defensive specialist, and his rep will land him somewhere.

for a price... cubs would have to eat at least half that contract, it's God-awful

I would definitely turn that statement around. I hate to beat a dead horse, but I like to make a point of this.

The offense makes it a no-brainer. The defensive advantage is what is wonderful. Defense = the icing on the cake that is a hitter.

Maybe I'm just nitpicking, though.

Agreed. Kendall makes a great backup/insurance plan option behind Soto. Only if it's made clear that Soto is the starter, like you said, though.
