i'd still keep kendall as the regular starter because he's shown good OBP ability since coming over, but he provides no power and his defense sucks. Blanco is basically useless and shouldn't play the rest of the year. I'd like to see Soto get about 1/3 of the playing time; more if Kendall hits poorly over the next 10 days.

God, the Blanco resigning just boggles the mind. Even if Blanco had stayed healthy put up numbers in line with his career norms, and Soto hadn't put up such an amazing season, it still would've been a terrible move. Add into that the fact that Blanco is aging and likely to decline, and Soto was young and likely to improve a little bit. I can't think of a backup catcher in the game who gets paid better than Blanco, and his career numbers are an OBP of .288 and an OPS+ of 65.

I remember the thread about the resigning, and the reaction was basically either "I'd have taken him for about 1/2 the price" or "what the hell, soto could do the same thing for about 1/10 of the price." At least there were a few defenders of the DeRosa signing. But Blanco? The entire friggin board panned that move. How is it that the only person on Earth who thought it a good idea to give Blanco $5.2M for 2 years, is the general manager of the Cubs? Hendry's overvaluing of mediocre players really is stunning.

Yeah, but if Blanco had pictures of you to, maybe you would have been in the Hendry camp. :D

Kendall's throwing is becoming a major liability and we all know he's capable of extended stretches of terrible hitting. I like the .919 OPS he put up in August but obviously he can't sustain that. If it were up to me Kendall would be on a very short leash. When his offense starts to cool down his playing time should be slashed very quickly.

kendall's throwing isn't great, but his defenders haven't helped him either. he's made some pretty good throws that were dropped by Theriot, etc.

overall though, not so great

It also doesn't help that outside of Zambrano and Ancient Steve, none of our starters are very good at holding runners.

Soto's not eligible for the postseason roster, correct?

If not, he could be a substitute if someone has an "injury"...right?

Doesn't Pagan's injury allow us to add another position player to the postseason roster? Or is that only if Pagan goes on the 60-day DL?

No reason why he shouldn't go to the 60-man. He's not going to get back in time to be ready to play. His one skill would be pinch running, but Pie can do that.

A pretty nice mostly fluff article on Soto here-here's a couple quotes:

He's a good-looking player. We're going to give him some playing time here in September. How much, we'll see. He didn't come here to sit

"This is a guy who's going to be good," Blanco said. "He showed he can do it. All I can do is help. I'm happy to help him out, and hopefully next year he'll stay with the team and play every day.

"I see a kid here who could be the No. 1 catcher next spring," Piniella said.

I see that too... but the big question is, does Jim Hendry see that?

I've read numerous times now that Soto came into this year lighter and stronger. It doesn't seem to be a case of him being fat and unmotivated previous, so much as getting on a proper diet and lifting plan. This gives me hope that his 2007 season isn't a complete fluke - that plus the fact that catchers often take a little longer to develop.

Hopefully he stays with the new program through the winter. If the Cubs are at all competent - big if - the catcher's job should be Soto's to lose in 2008.

Wow. Gotta love the quote there from Blanco. Good to see he knows his role on the team.

Yeah, I wish more players could be like that.

but Blanco is still bad.....

Just to clarify....this is my understanding:

Yes, Soto is eligible for the post season roster. If you were on the 40 man by september 1, you can be on the post season roster. It doesn't matter if you were in the bigs or in the minors. It only matters that you were on the cubs 40 man roster. So a team CANNOT get a player from another team just before the postseason and add him to the playoff roster. that's what the rule is designed to protect against.

should the cubs make the postseason (and i believe they will), and should soto continue to hit down the stretch (and i think he will), then you will likely see soto in the postseason.

Nope, it's the 25-man roster, not the 40-man. The only way another player can be added from your own system is if a player is on the DL and will miss the playoff series (and, of course, the player has to be in your system when that roster is set on Aug. 31).

Large amounts of money tend to buy less perspective instead of more. thisis somewhat impressive. Not knowing any more facts about the case, I'll saay that Blanco sounds like a good, reasonable guy.

And I believe that has to be the 60-day DL, not 15. If the Cubs were to transfer Pagan to the 60-day then Soto could replace him.
