All I heard on Sporting News radio this morning was how great the Cardinals have been playing and how they probably will win the Central. It doesn't matter that since the All Star break, the Cubs have the best record in the N.L. (at least they did late last week), no matter what the Cubs do, they can get no respect. One commentary even said the Cubs have more talent but the Cardinals will probably win the division.

I'm sick of all the Cardinal love. Yes, I think the Cubs should have run away with this division, but c'mon. The Cubs are in first place going into September. Give us some credit!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I severely doubt the Cubs have the best record in the NL since the ASB, as they are a whopping 3 games over .500 since then. Arizona, the Mets, Phillies, and Cincinnati are better.

Mostly, the thing that bothers me is the thought process that says "The Cardinals have gained 8 games on the NL Central leaders since June", even though technically the Cubs were in 3rd place in June.

I've heard people give us credit. The Cards are the champs and they're making a run. I hate them, but it would be incredibly bad reporting to ignore the WS Champions while they are making a credible run for the playoffs.

personally, i don't care AT ALL what the media thinks about my teams. in fact, it's amusing to me just how bent out of shape some you get about it (esp. the supposed Joe Buck hate of the the Cubs)

Sounds ridiculous but when one team is known for overachieving and one team is known for underachieving, this is the kinda of commentary you get.

Yeah, maybe it was since the magical date of June 3. I know I saw something where the Cubs had the best record in the NL.

Mike Golic predicted this morning that the Cards will win the NL Central.

He could be right, but Mike Golic knows exactly 0 about baseball. He was saying we'll win the Central when we were hot too. Before that it was the Brewers. He just rides the current hot team and says they'll win it all. Eventually, at the end of the season, he'll be right -- and he'll ignore the 10 other predictions he made before that were all wrong.

Golic is the epitome of the "I know more because I'm an athlete" commentator. He is a relatively smart guy, but he's so close minded and uninformed it's ridiculous.

That being said, I'm all for the media falling all over STL.

Yes, it's since the June date (the day after Lou's meltdown), not the All-Star break.

I dont even value mike golic's opinion on football. so reading that makes me giggle.

and the cardinals deserve all the happy media love. their team is so bad on paper. its an impressive run.

I'm still waiting for the Cardinals to have a terrible stretch against bad teams. I was really hoping it would come this series.

The Cardinals blow. They are of no concern to me. Just like I wasn't concerned that the Brewers had a large lead in early June, late May. Smart people are like that.

Smart money says they suck, but smart money also says they should be way out of it. They're not good, but there's no reason why they can't finish a game better than the Cubs over the next thirty days.

There are several reasons:

1. They aren't a good team

2. They have a tougher schedule than us

3. They have to play something like 37 games in the next 33 days with no off-days to close the season

4. They need to finish 2 games better than us, not 1

5. We have a winning record against them

I'm going to guess (without knowing much about you or the other people in question) that the people who are upset by this subject themselves to a lot more of the national sports media than you do.

You know...to a large extent I agree with this. If the Cubs were 4-5 games up they'd be the talk of the country...we'd start getting goat stories, and black cats run before every broad cast...if we can have the media all over the Cards while we still maintain the lead I think its better for us in the long run...the pressure will be big enough in the Playoffs, no reason to seek in right now too.

i really think some people here are complete media masochists. "i hate Mariotti!" "SI sucks!" "FOXSports.com is full of crap!"

STOP READING IT THEN

Yea, I don't mind the Cards receiving the media attention either, but if the Cubs maintain their lead, they'll be getting their attention.

In response to the original post, the Cubs were getting plenty of respect by the end of July. Plenty of power rankings had them as a top 8 team, with one even placing them at the 5 spot. They were a good team and people acknowledged it. They then proceeded to suck for two weeks, the magnitude of which still exceeds the success over the recent 8-10 games or so.

The Cardinals were left for dead a while back, and they just passed the formerly 8.5 game leaders to move into second place. Yes, they deserve the attention. (I won't get into what else they deserve, though  )

what I don't understand is the Reds love. I've heard several sources and even people here at work talking about how the Reds are back in the race.

Sure, they've played well recently, but seriously. I've heard, "anybody can win this division" and "don't count out the Reds, they've got a lot of games coming up in the central"

They're 12 games under .500. 8 games out. I'm sorry, but if you guys don't mind. I'm gonna count the Reds out.

The Cardinals will be a threat if they continue to get excellent pitching performances from most or all of Adam Wainwright, Braden Looper, Kip Wells, and Joel Piniero. I'll leave it up to the individual to decide how likely that is.
