Piniella and Cubs general manager Jim Hendry also met to discuss September callups. The team was expected to add about six players when rosters can expand beyond 25.

My guess on the six to be called up:

Soto

Fox

Cedeno

Gallagher

Ohman

Pignatiello (is he eligible after being just sent down?)

They have a few other bullpen options (Petrick, Rapada, Cherry, Cotts) so it could be interesting to see who winds up getting the call.

I think Semptember roster expansions is one of the loopholes.

i don't think cedeno will be recalled. i think you'll see EPatt instead and the backup SS would be Derosa in the event of a Theriot injury.

I also don't think it will be Ohman, but cherry or rapada or something. i think Ohman is done as a Chicago Cub.

I wouldn't mind seeing Petrick up. From what I can remember he was lit up hard once but the rest of the time he had a good live arm. Piggy and Gallagher as well. Soto, Fox, and Cedeno as the 3 bats.

I wouldn't consider Cedeno a bat.

I don't think Fox gets the call with the Monroe acquisition, and Lou's apparent disgust with him his last game.

Cedeno, Soto, and Gallagher all would have to be locks. I would guess Pignatiello, Ohman, and Cherry as well.

I think the only thing I'd personally change would be Patterson for Cherry. Though, I wouldn't mind having Scott Moore as a 2nd lefty pinch hitter.

Yes, there's no mandatory 10 days in the minors once rosters expand.

I would probably rather have Cherry than Gallagher. But Patterson would provide another pinch runner along with Pie. The situation that effectively ended Sunday's game could be averted with antoher speed guy on the bench. Plus, he has the versatility to play OF and IF if needed.

I believe that the player has to remain down until the end of the minor league team's season (Sept. 3 for Iowa) if that's less than 10 days. After the 30-3 game the Orioles optioned one of their starting pitchers to add another reliever. They optioned him to their rookie league team rather than AAA specifically because the rookie league team's season ends earlier so he could thus be recalled earlier.

Here's the guys I think have the best shot to be called up:

Gallagher, Cotts, Ohman, Rapada (once eligible)

Soto, Cedeno, Moore, Patterson, Pagan (when healthy)

There's still even a few more guys that could be useful players.

I don't want to see Ohman on ths team again.

Especially in September. Hopefully he'll be used as a mop-up.

If you're adding Pagan when healthy, don't forget Guzman, who should hopefully be ready by around Sept. 10.

What about Koyie Hill?

If they had a spot on the 40 man for him, I'd say he probably would be recalled, but he was DFA'd so he's not on the 40 man roster anymore.

I'd go with Ohman, Rapada, Pignatiello, Gallagher, Cedeno, Soto, Patterson, and Moore.

I take 3 lefties so we can have a total of 4 and not hesitate to bring in a lefty to face just one hitter. Might make the games longer, but you have the resources so use them.

Gallagher is there to eat innings in blowouts either way, also I believe we'll need one spot start due to the doubleheader with St. Louis.

Cedeno gives us a defensive replacement at SS should Theriot be double switched or taken out for whatever reason.

Soto a 3rd catcher, and 2nd righty off the bench on days when Murton or Monroe starts.

Patterson pinch runner and a 3rd backup MIF

Moore a 2nd power threat from the left side if Ward has hit already(assuming a Floyd start)

EDIT: With the 3rd catcher I'd at least consider the idea of replacing Kendall late in the games with Blanco for defensive purposes, obviously only if it accompanies a new pitcher.

I'm fairly confident we've seen the last of Koyie Hill in a Cubs uniform

Here is an article naming 6 of the suspected players, but there is also a bit of a surprise in there as well.

The Cubs also are keeping an eye on Double-A Tennessee pitcher Kevin Hart, who has won nine of his last 10 decisions

He's actually at AAA. And today would be his day to start on 5 days rest but Ryan O'Malley was called up from AA and bumped him. :-k

Bruce says

Call-ups coming: Here's a name to keep in mind for September call-ups: right-handed pitcher Kevin Hart. The Cubs obtained Hart from Baltimore last December for infielder Freddie Bynum, and at Class AAA Iowa, Hart is 4-1 with a 3.54 ERA. At Class AA Tennessee, he was 7-5 with a 4.45 ERA.
