Mike (Indy): Who will the cubs pickup before the deadline?

Steve Phillips: (12:25 PM ET ) The Cubs are looking at pitching in the bullpen to help them. They are also kicking around Lofton's name to bat lead off so they can move Soriano down in the order, 14 of his HR have been solo shots, so they are not maximizing his production by having him bat leadoff. Look for them to make a move to help thier chances down the stretch.

An idea that most of us have thought of, and I'm sure Hendry has been toying with the idea. Another instance of Phillips telling us something we already know.

But, as long as we don't give up much, I would not mind seeing:

Lofton

Riot

Lee

Ramirez

Soriano

DeRosa

Floyd

Fontenot

Kendall

Not great but it is better than some of the lineups we've thrown out this year, and it gives more potential of better run production. Personally, I'd rather see us acquire Grady Sizemore, put him in right and bat him leadoff. Guess I'm gonna be left dreaming on that one.

Hasn't Piniella said that he won't move Soriano from the leadoff spot anymore? He tried it when Aramis was out, and didn't go back to it. He tried it vs. LHPs and is not going back to it. I don't see a reason to mess with Soriano. He's obviously much more comfortable hitting 1st.

Get Lofton and hit him 2nd.

Sizemore is probably one of the most untouchable players in all of baseball.

I think JH is going to try and shoot big for someone like Griffey or Dunn first, but if the price for them is too expensive, which could very likely be the case, I sure wouldn't mind Lofton, he's having a productive year and would look nice at the top of the lineup.

I think Soriano will continue to hit leadoff no matter what. Even so, I think getting Lofton would be a nice pickup

Soriano

Lofton

Lee

Ramirez

Floyd

DeRosa

Theriot

Kendall

Bench:

Ward

Fontenot

Pagan

Blanco

Jones (?)

Quit that... you and all of your "reality" bringing everyone down from their own wonderful make-believe world.

Fine, I'll settle for Carl Crawford. :D

I wonder if Steve Phillips has heard Lofton's name "kicked around" by the Cubs people, or by Bruce Levine, who has been talking about Lofton on ESPN AM 1000 for the last 2 weeks.

Gonna be hard to play with two second basemen and no pitcher. ;)

Although, FWIW, Kendall's bat is about as good as a pitcher's.

I'm guessing this is in preparation for the World Series, since you have 9 position players listed there.

*attempt to cover up error* Nah, I hear we're trying DeRosa as a pitcher since he plays everywhere else. *attempt to cover up error*

Whether he hit 1st or 2nd, Lofton would be a huge asset. The Rangers were interested in Jones, right?

I could live with Lofton if it was a last resort. If Lofton was the only OF we acquired by the deadline, I wouldn't mind seeing Derosa getting a lot more starts in RF. His defense has been far superior to Floyd's and frankly I feel as comfortable with Fontenot at the plate as I do Floyd lately. If nothing else it would be able to keep fragile Floyd somewhat fresh(if that's possible).

But, after all that rambling, just go get Dunn or Griffey Jim!

I'm pretty much in agreement with all of this. I wouldn't mind Floyd being moved to Ward's role. Unlike Dunn, Cliffy's bad defense isn't made up for by his bat.

Nothing against Lofton, but I'm still of the opinion we need a power bat, and if we don't get it I fear our offense will falter down the stretch.
