Nothing against Lofton, but I'm still of the opinion we need a power bat, and if we don't get it I fear our offense will falter down the stretch.

Do these numbers help us out?

Overall for the entire season

-------------------------------

OBP: 10th in NL @ .329 (PHL, LAD, COL are 1st, 2nd, 3rd)

SLG: 8th in NL @ .411 (PHL, MIL, FLA)

JULY (Great pitching gave us the 12-6 mark)

-------------------------------

OBP: 11th in NL @ .325 (LAD, PHL, STL)

SLG: 13th in NL @ .365 (PHL, FLA, LAD)

Against right-handers

-------------------------

OBP: 6th in NL @ .336 (PHL, COL, ATL)

SLG: 9th in NL @ .412 (PHL, FLA, CIN)

Against left-handers

-------------------------

OBP: 14th in NL @ .305 (LA, PHL, COL)

SLG: 9th in NL @ .407 (MIL, FLA, PHL)

SLG in July and OBP against lefthanders has been a huge issue. It would validate the need for a right-handed power bat.

I'm beginning to think Aaron Rowand is the way to go. And guess which team is in town on the day of the trading deadline?

Trade for Church, use Pie to get someone like Teixeira?

and do what - move a gold glove 1B to OF???

Yep. Seems like a plan to me.

Yes, for the time being. Teixeira wants(and would get from us) a long term extension, and would bridge 1B after Lee's contract expires in a couple years.

and to think...people got all crazy like when i suggested sticking arod in at first and trading dlee

Teixeira has played RF previously, so it's hardly a stretch to put him out there, sign him to an extension, and have him move to first in three years when DLee's contract runs out.

Hard to do, but much more logical than signing ARod and moving him to a position where his defense isn't near as valuable, then trading off one of our best hitters.

There isnt a big market for a starting CF when it comes to playoff contenders so it seems Lofton can definetly be had without fighting other teams and getting in prospect bidding wars.

Lofton should have been resigned after the 2003 season...Leadoff guys might be the hardest thing to find in baseball....Bat him 2nd or 1st who cares...He makes stuff happen...At least the Loften I remember did.

Probably because Corey Patterson got off to such a hot start. Lofton was a significant upgrade over Goodwin.

Yeah. A lot of people attributed the Cubs making the playoffs to Lofton's presence as a true leadoff guy or whatever, which isn't true because the offense was actually better before he got there(and the pitching was the reason we did anything anyway). That doesn't mean that Lofton wasn't good as a Cub though, far far from it(.327/.381/.471 in 236 PA's).

the overall team offense may have been slightly down after lofton's arrival, but how much worse would it have been had he NOT been acquired?
