No surprise there. Gallagher was definitely the odd man out. He's better of starting at AAA anyway.

Now if we could just have the old Wuertz back...

Not to jinx the Cubs pitching staff, but have Zambrano, Lilly, Marquis or Hill missed any starts this year? (not used to that sort of thing)

I'm sure that Gallagher is going to be needed to pick up a start or two for one of the starting five at some point in the season.

I don't think they have. In that event, I think I'd prefer Mateo right now for a spot start.

The roster shuffle begins

I expect to see Ward on the DL tomorrow and probably Cedeno being called up.

That's exactly the move I'd expect too. If Ward can't start and Derosa is at first, the Cubs have no backup middle infielder since Izzy is gone.

Man, the Cubs go through options like popcorn.
Not really. It doesn't matter how many times a player goes up and down during the year, it's still just one option.

Has Mateo got above Single A in his rehab starts yet?? I'd give the ball to Gallagher before Mateo, but he's probably 2nd in line, just ahead of Holliman. I guess Wade Miller is the only other real option outside of Gallagher/Mateo, and I don't want to see him on the Cubs again. It'd be nice to hear something on Guzman, he's an arm we could use down the stretch from the pen as a long relief/spot starter.

Yeah, I didn't realize that until this year either. Cubbies can shuffle to their heart's content if it's the same players being brought up & down.

We have done it with different players a bit though.

At any rate, I'm happy this is finally happening. Having Dempster back should cascade back through the bullpen, allowing Marmol to get some more rest. Maybe that's why Lou has been using him so much lately -- he knew help was on the way?

Can we get a sticky explaining how options work? Because it seems to be one of the most misunderstood concepts on this board.

Gallagher has to have some serious frequent-flier miles built up by now.

He's just going from Chicago to Des Moines, so I'm guessing it's more high gasoline bills instead of frequent flier miles.

Cubs need to get off this LOOGY obession. Get rid of Eyre...I'm sure Gallagher or some other righty can manage to fair better against lefites vs. Mr. ADD
