I bet the 2 week period for Fox is nothing more than a sunshine pumping routine. If a deal can be made, I feel like the Cubs will make it.

I've never been that enamored with Fox. He's got some power, but he has absolutely no idea how to take a walk. Plus, he really doesn't have a position at this point. He's basically just been shoved into outfield and 1b because he wasn't good enough to stick behind catcher. I'm actually really surprised that they called him up.

I read that the PTBNL may be Xavier Nady. About when can we expect an annoucement as to who the PTBNL is/

If I understand my rules, the PTBNL cannot be Nady.

Hmm why is that?

If a team receives a PTBNL, the player must not have been playing in the league to which he is being sent at the time of the trade (e.g. if the Red Sox receive a PTBNL, the player may not have been playing in the American League at the time of the trade). This rule was instituted after Harry Chiti was traded for himself in 1962 (he was traded from the Indians to the Mets for a PTBNL, which turned out to be himself). As a result, PTBNL's are usually minor leagues. Sometimes, teams will use players on the disabled list as players to be named so as to avoid having to get special permission from the commissioner's office.

Player can't be from the same League as the team trading for him. That's why PTBNL are usually minor leaguers.

PTBNL's can not be in the same league as the team they were traded for. Since the Pirates and Cubs both play in the National League, it has to be a minor leaguer.

PTBNL can't have played in the same league as the team he's going to for more than x number of games.

The PTBNL will be a hard throwing zero control project that we'll never hear from again.

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this but if the Pirates actually start Izturis will they consider picking up his option? That would be beyond dumb.

That rule must actually have been instituted long after the Chiti incident, because in the 1980s the Cubs traded Dickie Noles to the Tigers for Dickie Noles. Same scenerio; Noles was traded for a PTBNL, and then Noles was returned to the Cubs as the PTBNL.

This whole topic reminds me of somethingI've never been able to figure out, and I hope my bretheren here can help:

Back in '97 when the Cubs were in their second go-around with Shawon Dunston, they traded him to the Pirates at the waiver deadline(8/31) for a PTBNL. I was a Dunston fan back then, so I was paying attention in the weeks that followed to see who the Cubs actually ended up getting. I never heard. A couple years ago, I remembered the whole scenario and checked Baseball Reference.com. It mentioned the trade, but never indicates on the site who the Cubs ever got. I ended up being almost convinced that the Cubs forgot about this and never got anything in return. Obviously, this is beyond unlikely, but I still, despite several attempts haven't been able to find this out. Does anybody know, or remember who they ended up getting?

They probably settled on a $$$ amount instead of a player.

Or a swap of end of ST minor league roster filler and the Cubs got a "better" player by saying that they satisfied the PTBNL clause. Next ST look at the minor league transaction wire. Lots of "consideration" and "future considerations" notes.

is there a deadline for naming the PTBNL? I know the Pirates stress winning at every level of the minors, so they may be balking on sending someone who, to them, is key in a certain farm team's success. Not a problem if the player is from A ball, however, as both A teams suck this year

The transaction must be completed within 6 months.

Did anyone see this at the end of the MLB Trade Rumors post?

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007/07/pirates-acquire.html

A fellow had emailed me about the Bucs' interest in Izturis a few days ago, but I couldn't confirm it and didn't print it. The reason I mention it is that he also said the Cubs have interest in Xavier Nady.

I have been for the Cubs acquiring Nady for a couple of years. Last year before the Cubs went south I was hoping they would get him to platoon with Jones. Sadly right now he is probably at his peak value. Having his best year. I am not sure what the Pirates want for him, but it would probably be more than the Cubs could have given the Mets last year for him.

But the Chiti situation Vance mentioned was also different leagues.
