he's young and he throws hard, if the price is right, why not?

I watched him about a month ago when they played the Brewers in Milwaukee. He fits that power pitcher mold that Lou has said to be fond of.

Didnt he basically leave the team for a month during spring training? or was that last year?

He's not a reclamation project in the same sense as Dempster/Williamson/Miller because he's recovering from mental issues, not injury. He had a good start this year as a starter, then faltered and was moved to the pen. Recently he's been pitching well again. I could see getting him with the idea of using him out of the pen the rest of this year and then giving him a chance to contend for a rotation spot in Spring Training next year.

That was last year. He was upset that the Royals expected him to compete for a spot in the rotation; he seemed to think that his 5-17 record and 5.80 ERA the previous year was good enough to automatically give him a rotation spot.

If that's what it takes to get Eyre off the team, eat as much of Eyre's salary as necessary/possible and jump on it. If the potential deal keeps Eyre as a Cub, I don't really see the point of doing anything at all to the bullpen.

Greinke's still just 23. He looked like a future 1 or 2 starter as a rookie when he posted a 3.97 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 100:26 K/BB ratio. I wouldn't mind taking a shot at him, but what would we do with him? Keep him as a reliever, then transition back to SP next spring?

Longterm I'd think his potential is definitely highest as a starter. I recall a column by Rob Neyer back in '05 where Neyer had him clocked as throwing at least one pitch in virtually every velocity 'slot' between like 70 MPH and 94 MPH (or thereabouts). Varied speeds as good as anyone.

Just a thought, but would adding Grienke make dealing Marshall a bit less painful?

It's probably too forward thinking for this organization, but if Griffey could be had for a deal with Marshall as the centerpiece- maybe, just maybe...

I think Hendry has been in love with Greinke for quite a while, as his name has popped up a few times the past couple of years.

The kid is still very young, so you have to think he can right the ship. But I'm not sure how helps this year's team.

Not a huge fan of that idea, but if you did do it the return for Marshall needs to be a more long-term piece than Griffey.

Veal, Marshall & Soto to Atl for Salty-----Salty starts with Kendall as back-up, DFA Hill.

Jones or Eyre + prospect + ton of cash for Greinke

Greinke takes Marshall's place, otherwise we have Gallagher, Mateo, or Guzman for the 5th spot?

Unrealistic much?

Greinke and Z could compare crazy notes.

Z's comments make me believe that as long as we don't drag our feet too bad this offseason, we should have little problem re-signing him.

I have a gut feeling that we may end up with Dunn which is fine by me. And if nothing else, I have to believe Jacque will be shipped off to anywhere just because of the whole fiasco earlier in the year. With Dunn, we have enough offense and call back up Pie so that Dunn's defensive miscues in RF will be minimal and more importantly Soriano has his best friend back.

Where would Dunn play? I can't imagine him trying to play RF.

He'd be a butcher out there, but imagine him in the middle of the lineup.

And Soriano (and Pie if recalled to start) would cover enough ground and play good enough defense to make up for Dunn's miscues.

They would not make up for Dunn's miscues. They would help. But they can't catch the balls hit at him or at his right.

he's not a good defender, but I have faith that he can catch the balls himself if they're hit AT him.

Greinke's last month:

15.1ip 1sv 16k 2.35 era and .78 whip

He's a reliever now? I thought he a guy with ace potential at one point?

He still does, but the Royals are idiots.

That may be the case, but it sure didn't help when he was struggling as a starter. Also that the Royals were losing relievers to the DL, combined with Greinke's struggles as a starter, is the reason why he got moved to the reliever spot.

I'll say this, Greinke's stuff actually is better as a reliever than a starter. Also, I will say that Greinke does have the capability to close games if needed.

Why do people seem to think we need another reliever? Not necessarily talking about this deal, but I keep hearing people say we need another reliever. Why? Our bullpen has completely righted the ship since earlier in the year, and is actually a strength right now.

Eh, it would be nice to get Eyre replaced. I have no problem with a better right handed reliever taking his place.

Eyre isnt really a problem on this team, since hes been relegated to mop up duty.

He's not a problem, but if we could get another good arm in the pen for a reasonable price I don't see why we should pass up on it, even with Wood and Dempster coming back.

Meh, Id rather work on SS or OF and leave the bullpen alone. I think we can fill the bullpen in house, and dont really want to give up anything to get a bullpen guy.

I'd love to take a chance on Greinke. He's still got a very high ceiling as a starter, just hasn't quite put it together yet. He started the year in Spring Training very solid. Then began the year in the Royals rotation and had two excellent starts - then had a couple poor starts - then shutout Minnesota for 7 innings - then two more poor starts and they threw him in the bullpen. He's been pretty solid in the pen as both a long man and late-inning guy. He's got electric stuff. He's still young, so I still think there's plenty of time to get him straightened out for a rotation spot. I also think maturity will aid Zack in dealing with his mental illness, resulting in more consistency in a rotation spot.
