I'd love to take a chance on Greinke. He's still got a very high ceiling as a starter, just hasn't quite put it together yet. He started the year in Spring Training very solid. Then began the year in the Royals rotation and had two excellent starts - then had a couple poor starts - then shutout Minnesota for 7 innings - then two more poor starts and they threw him in the bullpen. He's been pretty solid in the pen as both a long man and late-inning guy. He's got electric stuff. He's still young, so I still think there's plenty of time to get him straightened out for a rotation spot. I also think maturity will aid Zack in dealing with his mental illness, resulting in more consistency in a rotation spot.

If the price is right I would easily take a shot on Grienke. Anyone who wanted Josh Hamilton should want Grienke as well.

Why do people seem to think we need another reliever? Not necessarily talking about this deal, but I keep hearing people say we need another reliever. Why? Our bullpen has completely righted the ship since earlier in the year, and is actually a strength right now.

Realistically, you're right. The 'pen has been great of late, and reinforcements are enroute (Dempster, Wood, Mateo, and/or Guzman) or available now (Gallagher/Petrick, Cotts, Rapada, Piggy, Cherry).

But that said, the thought of adding a Gagne or a Grienke is mighty tasty.

We should add another reliever if for no other reason than to make sure Marmol's arm doesn't fall off.

Greinke's last month:

15.1ip 1sv 16k 2.35 era and .78 whip

He's a reliever now? I thought he a guy with ace potential at one point?

He still does, but the Royals are idiots.

Yes, please tell us about your inside knowledge of the Greinke situation and how the Royals are "idiots" in the matter.

i am just really hoping that a RF situation is going to be remedied in the upcoming days

Greinke is vastly overrated. His fastball is far to straight for him to have any long term success.

That's kinda the point with him, right? 4 seam fastball and a very good change, with constantly changing velocities(like someone alluded to earlier). Or am I confusing his repertoire with someone else?

I'm not sure what I said that hurt your feelings, but it's a safe assumption that one of the more talented pitchers drafted in recent memory still has that talent at 23 given he's had no major surgeries. It's also a safe assumption that putting a pitcher with that much talent in the bullpen is idiotic.

Sorry for running over your cat.

So, you are basically just choosing to ignore that Greinke has a 5.71 ERA in 34.2 innings as a starter this year and a 3.48 ERA in 38.2 innings of relief? In summation, the Royals finding the best role for him to help their team this year makes them idiotic? Interesting.

It's good their putting him in a position to succeed eight now, given what happened to him last year, but long-term if he continues to progress like he has recently, KC at some point down the road should re-examine whther or not he start again.

To be honest, given how poorly Elarton has pitched for them, Greinke would be an improvement over him but it is in Greinke's best interest to stay at a productive spot for now.

No, what's idiotic is that you feel you have the knowledge to pass judgment on a situation that you have exactly zero familiarity with. Zack has social anxiety disorder, and loses focus--badly--in extended outings. It is in his best interest to pitch in short stints, hence the move to the bullpen. And he has responded.

Just because the kid could once dial it up to 100 mph does not mean he must be a starting pitcher. For reference, see Harrington, Matt and Griffin, Colt as two recent examples.

Now, would I trade for Greinke as a relief prospect? Probably not, because he does not fill a pressing need for the Cubs right now, and the unpredictability of Zack's situation is not worth the risk given our playoff chances. KC is a good place for him for now.

Scratch Julio Franco off the list. The Braves signed him today.

Isn't this the third city he's played for them in??

Talk about being unnecessarily hostile. I don't recall insulting you, but again, sorry for hurting your feelings. It's possible to criticize me without calling me idiotic. I'll be sure to say only nice things about the Royals from now on.

And I know all about social anxiety disorder, so don't lecture me.

Social anxiety disorder doesn't affect him when he relieves? I find that really, really hard to believe.

Do you have difficulty with reading comprehension, too? Or maybe you can find where I insulted you? I said your unfounded criticism of the Royals was idiotic, I did not call YOU an idiot. Read before you get on your high horse, please.

Whatever, there's no need to start a fight here. I think the Royals are mucking this up, you don't. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

Exactly; let's cool it (I'm referring to the entire exchange, not just you).

questioning somone's reading comprehension is essentially calling them an idiot, even I know that.

Heh, then tell that to Boston, who got smoked by several 97 mph fastballs.
