To be honest, if Soto can hit above .220 with some power I don't see how he can't be considered a serious upgrade. An OPS around .700 would be thrilling.

you are low-balling the kid then eh?

i expect above .260 easily

BP's predicted line (prior to this season's big AAA year): .235/.307/.336

That would still represent a major upgrade to what we've been getting since we traded Barrett.

I'm definitely hoping the huge numbers in AAA this year are a harbinger of future fortunes for Soto, but the fact that he's never been good with the bat before still has me worried.

He's still an improvement over what we've had - I just wonder how much of one.

About a month and a half late, but I suppose late is better than September 1. He definitely has to be starting, there's no question about that. I'm just glad that the Koyie Hill experiment is over.

And three teams being interested in Izzy is awesome as well.

Not sure who the three teams are but I heard that the other GMs are referring to them as Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest.

Oh no, I expect solid offense. I'm just saying that he'd have to screw up incredibly badly to not be an upgrade from our current production at catcher.

exactly...please pinch me because i cannot believe one of our black holes has just been vaporized!

let's not get ahead of ourselves. he's likely to bring the numbers up, but he's got a long way to go to vaporizing that hole

Bowden, Daniels, and Krivsky?

He's never hit for power. But I wouldn't say he's never been good. He's always had a decent amount of patience and hit for an acceptable AVG/OBP combo, for a catcher. He's just never hit for power. But catchers routinely take a little while to develop and power is always the last thing to come.

His numbers last year in AAA, .272 .353 .386 would be more than welcome on the 2007 Cubs.

i am going to go ahead and take the stance that the chances of him contributing the same level (or lower) of performance as hill/bowen are way lower than him adding much more IMO

Krivsky may give us Dunn if we can convince him that Izzy contributes a lot of RGIs and can double as a relief pitcher.

If he's able to come back you have Blanco, which would give the lucky number of 7. :D

Yeah, not good was probably the wrong terminology - he's a career .262 .344 .371 715 hitter though, nothing too special. Those numbers would definitely be an upgrade over what Bowen and Hill have given us so far but I wouldn't expect those numbers this year - unless he truly has turned a corner.

I like the call-up, don't get me wrong. Bowen and Hill simply aren't getting the job done and I think Bowen projects better as a Blanco-esque backup than a starter. I'm just tempering my excitement over Soto a little, hoping this year isn't a fluke.

I wonder if the Cubs can ship Izturis to the Tigers. Since Perez is suspended (and maybe going to be released afterward?), the Tigers might be looking for a new back-up defensive specialist at SS.
