With the BP short as it is, the starters not going very deep lately and a day off not until Thursday, does Marquis get forced to pitch tomorrow a minimum number of innings despite the way the game is going??

It happened twice last year where he had to go into the 5th despite given up 12 and 13 runs to the White Sox and Braves....all because of a short BP.

That will suck. Maybe we can get a solid outing from him, but it doesn't look like the Brewers have any desire to stop hitting. Yesterday's heart-breaker doesn't seem to have much of an effect.

Marquis hasn't been nearly as bad as some want to make him out to be. He has only failed to go 5+ innings on one occasion.

Hasn't he given up quite a few unearned runs this year?

If we weren't playing the Brewers, I'd say yes, he has to go 5 or 6 at least. However, in a series as important as this one, you burn everyone for a W against the division leaders and then let the next guy go 5-6 minimum.

Ok, but the last time he went PAST the fifth inning was May 24th.

Which tells me that's he's been sucking.

Agreed. The Cubs can still win the series, which would be impressive on the heels of consecutive sweeps. It's a HUGE game as far as I'm concerned (not quite a must-win, but certainly very important). Go all out to win this one and let the chips fall where they may on Monday.

I dunno. He's rarely been so completely shelled that he needed an early exit, but his ERA is probably deceptive considering his high walk rate and extremely low strikeout rate. Oh, and the entire rest of his career.

I assume every one along with myself is upset about the game today. But look at it this way, they cubs were one swing away from being down 0-1 in the series anyway. Given Hill's performance the first game was a gift. That doesn't necessarily make it an easier pill to swallow, but at least we're not down 2-0. Let's take the series tommow and then win 3 or 4 against WSH next week. Win tommorow, 3 against washington would put us at 2 over, build off that and then watch the scoreboard. Hell it's alot better than a week ago.

Last three starts he has pitched 5 1/3, 5, and 5 2/3. so he has actually pitched past the 5th inning twice in his last three starts.

He's gone backwards quite a bit from his 1st two months. His hits allowed, HRs allowed, and BBs have increased and it's hurt him quite a bit this month.

It's up to him to turn it around, while he doesn't have to be as good as he was the 1st two months, he can't be as bad as he has been this month for them to have a chance.

I said when he was going good, if he struggles, that'll be when you see if he has progressed from his days in STL/ATL. Before, when he would struggle he would try and be a power pitcher and throw too many 4 seamers and curves and try and strike everyone out.

I think Balsa meant past the sixth inning. Otherwise, Balsa's statement and Bruno's statement couldn't both possibly be true. I think Balsa was just pointing out that though Marquis has only failed to pitch at least 5 inning in 1 start (and that was a really bad one), he's hasn't pitched 6 complete innings (or more) since May 24.

Point being - if you arbitrarily pick 5 IP as the standard, he's only failed to make it that far once. But, if you arbitrarily pick "more than 6.0 IP" as the standard, he's failed more often than not - in fact, he's only pitched more than 6.0 IP on 5 occasions and only once in his last 9 starts.

The Brewer's bats must be extremely tired about right now. Cubs win this game.

Hahaha. Nice one.

My advice? Marquis should wear body armor under his uni today.

Meh. The Brewers offense isn't as good as it has looked the last couple games, and if Marquis is wearing body armor Bush should also invest. He has been as bad ALL season as Marquis has been recently.

They are 7th in the majors in runs. They're not going to put up 10+ every game out obviously.

We're 18th. Sox are 30th 8-)

dude there are no more day offs until the all star break i think...they have 4 at DC and 3 at Pitt...but that doesnt matter you worry about them going 6 or 7 against the nationals tomorrow...you need to do everything you can to win this game...i mean its the closest to a must win you're gonna get for july 1st

OK - but they are averaging 4.99 runs per game and the Cubs 4.61 so it is not exactly a monumental difference. Also, RH starting pitchers for both teams today and the Cubs are ranked 12th in the majors against RHP and the Brewers only 19th. Brewers are ranked first against LHP which might help explain the struggles of Hill and Marshall the last two games.
