He's batting under the mendoza line (currently at .199) and he has an OPS of .683. What happened to him? He's losing millions of dollars everyday in his walk-year. Terrible.

Not sure exactly what it is, but I'm willing to bet a lot of it is mental. He struggled a whole lot early and seems to just be digging himself a deeper hole. It's almost like he goes to the plate expecting to get out - he has no confidence right now.

I think he'll pull out of it sometime this year, but he should be had cheap in the offseason (hint, hint). Also, Schuerholz has said multiple times on broadcasts now, the Braves can't afford to re-sign him unless he takes a serious paycut. He's not willing to right now, but I suspect he'll be forced to in the offseason.

Too bad the Cubs probably won't be able to spend any money this offseason because they have proven they love to give out multimillion dollar deals to the worst player available.

he's 13th in the NL in walks.

Cause he's living off of his past accomplishments and teams are still pitching him cautiously.

Even if pitchers are pitching cautiously, you still have to be patient to get the walks. Pitchers can throw every pitch outside of the strike zone to Jones, but he won't take a lot of walks unless Z/Lou shoots him with a tranquilizer when he's at the plate.

He started playing @19 right? Could he be hitting his natural regression a tad early because of this?

Unless you are implying he was actually 23, then this makes no sense. Guys don't just have a finite number of swings in them before they deteriorate.

It's probably a combination of things. Is this the first time he's really had a lengthy slump like this? Sometimes when a player goes through it the first time, it's really tough to figure it out & push through.

I do agree with the impatient angle -- he could stand to take a few more pitches. But then again, lots of players could.

I'm not sure how much money he's really losing. Yes, the price will go down, but given his past accomplishments I find it likely at least some teams will scoff at this year and give him a handsome contract.

He has an 83 OPS+ right now. In 2001 he had a 96, which included an 83 over the 2nd half. He's struggled from time to time in the past. He's never been a high average guy, but he doesn't, and hasn't had, patience issues. He's striking out at a higher rate.

Perhaps his eyes are deteriorating as he enters his 30s.

They know what his problem is- He is pulling off and stepping into the bucket.

The Braves announcers, coaching staff, and Bobby Cox have all tried to talk to him about it, but he refuses to listen to anyone. So Cox has dropped him to the 7th spot in the lineup and wont return him higher into the order until he gets his "act" together.

He only dropped him to 7th one day. He went back to 6th the next day, and then he's spent the last 3 days in the cleanup spot.

This is not true. His IsoD has never been below .050 in any full season and his career IsoD is 0.079. He's perceived as being impatient because he strikes out a lot, but he also walks a lot. Despite his .199 BA, he has an OBP of .300 this season. He's perceived as being impatient because he strikes out a lot but there are other measures of patience.

How stupid of him not to listen. The Braves are planning to move on in 2008 without him. He is pretty much hurting himself.

If Chip Carey is trying to give me hitting advice, I probably wouldn't listen either.

Andruw's performance this year has nothing to do with the Braves letting him go. His price is far too high for the Braves to afford and Schuerholz has said multiple times he'll have to take a "hometown discount" to stay in Atlanta.

The Braves still want him, they just can't afford fair market value.

I read this piece by Jason Stark last month about how overrated Jones is. This was just before the Cubs played the Braves last month. After reading the article, I was getting really annoyed with Bob and Len all up on his jock gushing about how great Andruw Jones is.

Good read:

Not sure where he's getting that Andruw is not a "very good" offensive player.

Eight seasons with at least a 113 OPS+, including highs of 126 (2000), 129 (2002), 121 (2003), 133 (2005) and 129 (2006). As can be seen, the highs are spread somewhat evenly throughout his career. I don't see the problem with his offense at all.
