Yeah, he was fearless, taking the mound knowing there was nothing left. Somehow in '98 he got the job done consistently.

RIP Shooter. 38 is just way too young to die, no matter what.

BTW Len & Bob just announced it on the Cubs broadcast too.

That's indeed sad to hear - you can't help but speculate around the causes when it's someone 38. The coolest thing I remember hearing about him was when he was trying to make a comeback with the Cubs (couple years ago?) and he was apparently living in a trailer out beyond the OF fence somewhere. I remember reading that he was great to the young guys in the minors just sittin around shootin the [expletive] and downing some beers with them after the games.

My condolences to his family.

I don't think any of us will ever forget this performance...

GIANTS 9TH: Mayne singled to right; Mueller singled to center

[Mayne to third]; MULHOLLAND REPLACED TAPANI (PITCHING); Javier

singled to left [Mayne scored, Mueller to second]; BURKS BATTED

FOR DUNSTON; Burks walked [Mueller to third, Javier to second];

SANCHEZ RAN FOR BURKS; Bonds lined out on a sacrifice fly to

right [Mueller scored, Javier to third]; BECK REPLACED

MULHOLLAND (PITCHING); Kent forced Sanchez (shortstop to second)

[Javier scored]; Carter popped to first; 3 R, 3 H, 0 E, 1 LOB.

Giants 3, Cubs 5.

RIP Shooter.

While he wasn't good as a Cub for the most part, I'll never forget his 1998 season. 51 saves converted out of 58 tries.

Unbelieveable.

I'll always remember his 1998 season and his time staying in his camper while pitching at Iowa. He definitely died too young.

I forgot how close that got at the end. If I was as jaded as I am now back then I would've been expecting us to lose, back then I knew they were going to win throughout the whole inning.

The link I posted on the first page of this thread is the ESPN article about Beck's stay in Iowa. A pretty cool guy who will be missed. He'd be a heckuva lot more fun to have on a show like Baseball Tonight than the stiff's ESPN props up on their set every night.

I guess I don't get the humor again. Oh well.

RIP Shooter. I loved ya' in 98'. No one got by with less stuff. It was amazing to watch you fling 87 MPH fastballs past major league hitters.

You're wasting your breath (and Tim's bandwith).

:?:

That was directed at me in response to something I said of a comment that IMB made. Check rants, if you want. But it really is a waste of time.

Terrible news. Beck was a very easy guy to root for. One of the most memorable Cubs "characters" of all time. RIP.
