This seasons over

It has been over since they went on that six game losing streak.

It was over when Hendry decided that Izturis could be a starting SS, Jones could be a starting RF, and we could get by with Jason Marquis as a starter. We were doomed from the start of the season.

The season isn't over.

It's not over, but you need to start considering it to be severely damaged when you are 8.5 games out in late June.

You really think this is a good team? I could understand if we started the season off slow, but it's June now and this team hasn't shown any signs of being a good team.

Can't complain too much about that one because at least Howry didn't let him advance. Though it would have been nice to have a runner on first with two outs instead.

Can't complain too much? Come on...

That has to be an out.

He made the right play and ran at the runner. He just got unlucky that the tag missed Lofton by a couple of inches.

A true Cubs play would have been for Howry to throw behind Lofton allowing Lofton to advance to third.

He made the right play initially, but once you have him committed to going back towards 2nd base you need to get rid of the ball. Howry held the ball for about 2 seconds too long and it cost him, and the game.

How do you know it cost him the game? If Howry makes the play there's a runner on first with two outs. With Catalanotto's hit, the runner would have been going on contact and probably could have scored anyway.

Just get rid of the veterans, Zambrano, Lee. We are sellers. Time to rebuild.
Hendry isn't going to rebuild

Pretty soon, it's not going to be Hendry's choice to make.

(Dear God: Please let me be right)

Yeah right, we don't really even have an owner. We give out NTCs to most guys like candy at Halloween. We are a big, huge mess.

because Catalanotto probably doesn't even PH in that situation if there is a man on 1st with 2 out. Bottom line is Howry held the ball too long, that has to be an out.

Is there any chance that the Cubs can fire Hendry at midseason? It's against the Cubs best interests to make sure that he does not make a bunch of bad moves that jeopardize the future of the team in a desperate attempt to save his job.

Or would the impending sale make the Cubs reluctant to pay a fired Hendry and a new GM at the same time?

This loss is definitely on the offense. How many times can a team not score with runners in scoring position, especially with no outs? :wall:

Nope. He's going to trade away what's left in the crappy farm system to bring in another reliever and Ken Griffey Jr., and we'll finish the year in 2nd place in the division with a .500 record. The farm system will be shot for years to come, but it'll be worth it.

I can see that happening.

This is a bad bad baseball team. A month ago I thought we we're a pretty good team just playing bad. But no, we're a bad bad team. How Hendry still has a job baffles and angers me. Go Cobs

Again, though, you still can't definitively say it cost him the game.

I think you pretty much answered your own question there at the end. I highly doubt that Hendry gets fired with the sale coming after the year. Basically, we're screwed.

If the Trib thought a buyer would find more value in the team after Hendry was fired, then possibly. But I highly doubt it. If the sale is delayed, there's a good chance he starts 2008 as a lame duck GM until things are straightened out.

how can you NOT complain about howry's play? that was horrible...the kind of thing that got barrett run out of town.

thinking that howry's play was not that big a deal is the type of thinking that has led to hendry remaining the GM and 40,000 people paying money to watch the cubs lose every day.

Yea the fact that Lilly gave up 5 early runs definatly should be overlooked. The offense had chances, and didnt but they still came back. Overcoming a 5 run deficit is not an easy thing to do, and we better get used to it because what we have seen the last 2 nights out of Lilly and Marquis are the real Lilly and Marquis. Its going to be brutal watching them pitch in 95 degree heat, with the wind blowing straight out.
