I am appalled at how fast everybody has turned on Barrett...

It just makes good baseball sense to take a pitch after a guy has issued a walk of course, Barrett has never been accused of having Baseball "Smarts".

No, good baseball sense would be to sit dead red on a fastball over the plate since Wells really doesn't want to fall behind a hitter with the bases loaded. The problem is not with him swinging, it's just that he failed to recognize that it wasn't "his" pitch.

David Wells isn't going to groove one out of fear of falling behind.

I'm appalled by watching him play the game.

That's funny. The last three years, he's been one of the very few reasons to watch the Cubs, and two bad months into the next season, everybody says they can't stand him.

Barrett haters remind me way too much of Yankee fans... that whole "what have you done for me lately?" crap. It's disgusting... and it's certainly not befitting of a Cubs fan.

Except Barrett only had one reason to tolerate him before...his bat. Now, that seems to have vanished. Not only that, his mediocre defense has seemingly gotten worse, there seems to be more issues with the pitchers he's catching, a problem that isn't new, and now he's added the fun new bonus of being a complete moron on the basepaths on par with Jones and Alou at their worst.

I can't speak for everyone, but I never thought Barrett was a "reason to watch," even when he was good. I appreciated the offense, but he really never struck me as anything all that special.

Barrett's flaws are nothing new, and instead of him learning or growing beyond them, he seems to be regressing them and making them worse as time goes on. The positives barely outweighed his negatives in the past, and now the negatives are "winning" by a country mile. I really don't see how getting fed up with a guy who was never really anything special and has now seemingly forgotten the only thing that made him tolerable is "disgusting." Barrett wasn't some untouchable that people didn't have issues with before.

Maddux's ERA with the Cubs those three seasons: 4.02, 4.24, 4.69.

Barrett did a lot more to help the Cubs win in those seasons than Maddux did.

Real baseball fans know that every Cubs pitcher who had a good season in thoes three years did so because of Maddux's influence.

Wait, I can't tell, are you being sarcastic?

Cubs fans on this site that have that attitude like cubbiechris make me sick to be a cubs fan. If a guy has been nails for you for 3 years, you don't throw him under the bus. The same thing happened to Z. It IS disgusting. and Pathetic.

I don't like being associated with those types of Cubs fans.

From a management perspective, if a guy isn't performing anymore, you can't be sentimental about him, you have to sit him and/or get rid of him. However, it would behoove fans to remember that past performance is often predictive of future performance.

I love Z. I love Barrett. That doesn't mean we don't have the right to be upset with how they're playing.

There is a difference between being upset with how someone is playing, and being an ungrateful Yankees fan.

A lot of people haven't liked him from the get go. It isn't like he is Sosa who everyone turned on.

Exactly. Same with Zambrano. With guys like him and Barrett, there have been criticisms with them since they started playing for the team, and many of those criticisms are very serious and valid points that should weigh heavily now that both are in the last year of their contracts.

I love how 16 wins with a 4.02 era aren't good enough for some people, yet they get all fired up over Marquis and Lilly.

I see...Just blindly support a player for what he did in the past. Sure.

You should absolutely support the player if he's on your team. But that doesn't mean you can't be critical of a player either. But like I just said, there's a difference between being critical and respectful and throwing players under the bus like Yankee fans do. That behavior sickens me. But to each their own.

And for two months Barrett has been crap. Who cares what he did in the past. That's not helping this team now.

The point is that he has a recent track record of playing very good baseball. It's not that he can't play very good baseball anymore, it's simply that he's struggling. And this excessive negative attitude, and all the booing, and all the crap Lou Piniella is giving him is not going to do anything to help him out of this prolonged slump.

And considering he's the only catcher on this staff who has the potential to be an asset to the team instead of a liability, I think we would be best suited to cut the man some slack. But instead we find ourselves just exacerbating the situation. You want to talk about what's not helping the team? It's the attitude espoused towards him...

Yeah, I wonder what Maddux would have to say about the one reason to watch the cubs? Since he did everything he could for three years to not pitch to the guy.

First off, never said he was the only reason... just one of the few.

Besides, for his entire career Maddux has requested a personal catcher with a freaking cannon for an arm. Why? Because he's consistently clocked among the slowest in the entire game with his delivery to home plate, and he never bothers to hold the runners in the first place. And since Maddux has been a bloody superstar most of his career, the teams caved in. It doesn't make it the right idea... it's just the one that happened.

Thanks, o lord of baseball fandom.

complete ignorance.

Yankees fans complain when a 97 win team doesn't win the World Series or when a league wide MVP doesn't establish himself as a true Yankee.

Cubs fans complain when a crappy player like Barrett comes back to earth after a few decent seasons and contributes to a team that's been miles under .500 while he's been here.

Man, I can never understand the stupidity involved in order to call Cubs fans ungrateful.
