I am appalled at how fast everybody has turned on Barrett...

It just makes good baseball sense to take a pitch after a guy has issued a walk of course, Barrett has never been accused of having Baseball "Smarts".

No, good baseball sense would be to sit dead red on a fastball over the plate since Wells really doesn't want to fall behind a hitter with the bases loaded. The problem is not with him swinging, it's just that he failed to recognize that it wasn't "his" pitch.

David Wells isn't going to groove one out of fear of falling behind.

He's definitely going to try to throw a strike, and he's more likely to leave something Barrett can drive than if . Regardless of the pitcher, the point remains that swinging at the first pitch with the bases loaded is not automatically a boneheaded decision.

What has he done a while ago? Very little.

This is a load of crap and you know it. Barrett has been one of the premier offensive catchers over the last two years.

La di freaking da. He's been a good hitter and terrible defender. The vast majority of his career has been abysmal, and hopefully his time on the Cubs is near its end.

But heaven forbid we say anything bad about him because we owe him so much for the greatness of the past 2 years.

Clearly reading comprehension is your shortcoming.

no one has said you can't say bad things about players. There's a way to do it respectfully, and a way to do it disrespectfully.

doing it disrespectfully makes one look like a jackass.

Anyway....

I didn't say anything about owing him anything, nor did I say anything about his past, so I'm not sure why you're bringing that up. I was just pointing out that saying he's given us "very little" in the past is a total load of crap, because it is.

There is a difference between being upset with how someone is playing, and being an ungrateful Yankees fan.

Thanks, o lord of baseball fandom.

Wait, aren't you the one who said the game was over when were down 1 run in the 5th inning?

And aren't you the one who said Barrett has been mediocre?

And for two months Barrett has been crap. Who cares what he did in the past. That's not helping this team now.

The point is that he has a recent track record of playing very good baseball.

Baseball? He had a track record for decent hitting. His general play, in my opinion, has always bordered on mediocre or worse.

That is absurd. He has been one of the top hitting catchers in the NL for three straight years, and you call that worse than mediocre? That smacks of bias and subjectivity. Even if you can't stand his lack of performance this year, he has been one of the best at his position since he came to the Cubs.

Bias? What bias? My "bias" is that I always thought he was medicore or worse at the catcher position. That's part of "playing baseball"...like I said, he had a decent or better bat, fortunately very often during his time with the Cubs, but many of the flaws people are really burned over now were always there. It's simply not accurate to say he played "very good baseball," because he wasn't very good at half of what he had to do as a baseball player.

Yes, I do it often. Explain to me how that is dictating how other fans should be fans of this team.

And aren't you the one who said Barrett has been mediocre?

Yup. Here, I'll do it again...Barrett is medicore or worse and has been as a catcher for his entire career with the Cubs. Explain to me how that is dictating how other fans should be fans of this team.

Boy, that sure showed me for being frustrated when I'm lumped in as a "Yankees fan" for thinking that guys like Barrett and Z have very real flaws that maybe should mean they shouldn't be Cubs after this season. Yeah, that was all exactly the same.

As long as it's not Barrett.

Since when is fielding half of a player's job? Even at defensive positions, I'll take the great hitting weak fielder over the slick fielding, no bat player any day. Barrett has been bad at fielding, but if you think his fielding outweighed his hitting for the last three years, you are probably magnifying the mistakes he used to make by imagining they were as bad as they have been this year and emphasizing fielding too much.
