so where is this patience i've been hearing so much about?

if he doesn't develop an ability to draw some walks, he'll be a failure, another utter failure.

He's had less than 75 ABs in his major league career, and he's only 22 years old. To add to that, he's hitting between Alfonso Soriano and Derrek Lee. I doubt the opposing pitcher is going to be too careful pitching to Pie. You can't force the opposing pitcher to walk you. He's had some very nice ABs so far. The broken bat RBI hit into right field a few days ago was probably the best AB any Cub has had this year. He worked the count to 3-2 then fouled off about 8 pitches before finally muscling the ball into right for the RBI. He then proceeded to stretch the single into a double on one of the best arms in the league.

The kid is going to be good. At worst he'll be an average offensive CF with excellent defense and speed. Now that's not what I want from him, but that's the floor with him. Just calm down and let him play.

i just said that despite his defense, despite his speed, despite his "clutchness", if he doesn't take some walks, he'll never be a consistent productive player in the league. and that would be a failing.

there are plenty of players who hit between 2 excellent hitters and still draw walks. and the plate appearance you're speaking of, he fouled off plenty of ball 4's. you can't be afraid to strike out as a major league player. i don't care what the results are right now, they're bound to be negative over the course of a major league season.

I never said that Pie is never going to be able to take a walk because of the guys he's hitting between. I said that right now it's going to be hard for him to draw a walk. Opposing pitchers are going to be very aggressive with him and attack him in the strike zone. Eventually, pitchers are going to have to work harder to get him out and pitch more to the edges of the strike zone. That's when you'll begin to see the walks increase. I agree with you that he needs to draw more walks to be a consistent offensive force in this league, but you can't force the opposing pitcher to throw balls.

And about that AB...there were some pitches in the sequence that would have been ball 4, but they were all too close to take. With 2 strikes you have to protect the plate. That's what Pie did.

So far I love what I see from Pie. He's been hitting well and I think his patience at the plate has been okay, despite what the IsoD numbers say.

Pie now hitting .387/.429/.581/1.010 in 35 PA's since his callup.

Those look a lot like his numbers at AAA this season. That tells me that this time around he has probably relaxed, isn't making such a big deal out of being in the bigs and is just doing what he was doing at AAA. Either that or he is just getting lucky.

Obviously, those numbers will come down, but if his batting eye can continue to mature, the Cubs could be looking at an excellent defensive CFer with a bat and speed game similar to Jose Reyes of '06. I'd take that.

They will come down. But he's batting right after his best bud. That's gotta give him some comfort. I hope this duo continues to gel because I would love to see Soriano and Pie leading off the top of the order for many years to come. So far, they really have seemed to get things going really well. Probably because of how high their #'s are right now. .

Remember that study that BP did last season that showed the incredible tangible effects of having friends on the same team? I can only imagine that those effects grow exponentially when they bat one after the other.

2004-2006: 7.16 BB%, 21.43 K%

2007, Iowa: 9.7 BB%, 12.4 K%

2007, MLB: 4.7 BB%, 17.6 K% (he's at 8.6 BB% and 14.3 K% since the callup)

hopefully, he keeps trending towards the BB% he has in Iowa this year. it's not great, but if he keeps hovering around a .200 IsoP, and continues to play great defense, i'll gladly take it.

He still has plenty of growing up to do, but the early results are most definitely promising. No question about it, there's plenty about his game that needs refinement (patience, baserunning, etc).

However, as it is, he's already a marked improvement from Juan Pierre. I'll gladly take that.

Have you seen Pierre's numbers this season? They're simply amazing:

.271/.299/.318/.617

That's an IsoD of .028 and an IsoP of .047...that costs $7.5 million.

Now that's gritty!

The Dodgers have that production for the next four years too!

5 walks

And counting...

More importantly, he has 4 walks in 38 ABs since returning from Iowa. His line since returning is now .316/.372/.474, with 9 runs scored, 8 driven in and 4 stolen bases without being caught in just 9 games.

All this talk of intangibles and hitting behind his friend is neither here nor there, but those numbers are real, tangible production. Unfortunately, they are only over 38 ABs. There is reason for hope and excitement, but I want to see him keep producing for longer than 9 games.

Still, this stat continues to amaze me. The Cubs without Pie on the roster are 10-23. With him, they're 18-11. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'...

Is that good? What about HR? Is he clutch? Your "stats" and "numbers" don't impress me.

Seriously. Take those stats and stick them up your ass, geek. I saw Pie with the bases loaded and his knees buckled on a curve ball. Told me all I needed to know.

He took a baseball right to the jewels and rolled around like a baby, if he had any grit he'd have jumped up and took 3rd.

They never mentioned the groin shot on the radio. I thought he broke a rib or something they way they talked about it.
