He played for Piniella in Tampa and a player the Cubs have supposedly been enamored with in the past (probably the low OBP and lack of discipline). I know there's a glut in the outfield already, but he has some ability (that Hendry typically likes) and could start out in Iowa. Bring him into the system and see what happens--at the very least he could be a 4th-5th outfielder/pinchrunner for '08.

Gathright grounds out an awful lot especially for a guy with supposedly blazing speed. He needs to find a way to turn those into hits whether its by bunting or a new approach because if he cant hit for power he darn better be able to hit for a high average. He needs to cut down on the K's as well. Otherwise he'll be a utility guy a la willie harris.

Isn't Gaithright just Juan Pierre-light.

Juan Pierre with Warp engines. "light" as in "light speed", maybe.

Isn't he the guy who jumped over entire cars?

I don't like Gathright by any means... but I wouldn't say no to acquiring him if we can get him for a nothing piece like Novoa or Eyre. It'd be nice to have him in the system just in case he proves that he can actually keep that OBP in the stratosphere with another year in AAA.

If the price for Gathright is cheap (and there's something to be said for "the guy can't even make the AAAA Royals, so how much is he worth?) I'd love to pick him up as a project.

What I would do is call up Rickey Henderson and pick him up as a minor league player/instructor. 25th man on AAA Iowa. Then I'd give him Gathright as his personal pet project and tell him to mold him into something usable. What's his motivation? Tell him that if he Gathright earns it with his help, you'll give both of them a September callup.

If Rickey Henderson could somehow export his brain into Joey Gathright's body, you'd have a leadoff hitter for the next decade. If not, assuming the cost was low (trash for trash), no big loss.

i gotta say, the whole jumping over cars thing is pretty cool

+1. That's one of the most random/cool things I've ever seen a baseball player do.

Of course I suppose you could turn that around and say that playing baseball is one of the most random things I've ever seen a car jumper do.

And a very annoying person to interview.

Rickey is may all-time favorite "I wish we had but really dont like"

He is right above Barry Bonds, Steve Carlton and Eddie Murray.

edit: I would rather take a chance on Elijah Dukes than Joey Gathright. I would not be that excited about adding Dukes either.

It would be much cooler if the car were moving, however. :D
