time for his release.

Wade Miller yielded one run on five hits in five innings in a rehab start Saturday at Triple-A Iowa, topping out at 81 m.p.h. on his fastball. With no room in the rotation, the Cubs could grant Miller his release soon if he doesn't decide to retire. His lack of velocity is troubling.

"The more he toes the rubber, the more his velocity will come up," Iowa manager Buddy Bailey told the Des Moines Register.

except that hasn't happened...at all.

HAHAHA if he steps into the rotation only being able to hit 81, Im going to the next Cubs open workout. I could hit 83....well in 1998 I did but that gives me a chance right? HAHAAHa

His velocity is actually decreasing. Wow, 81 mph? I know there are a few members on here that can throw faster than that with good control. Time to part ways with him.

cripes, I could hit 81

Ditto. Given that I havent tried locating it to the exact, I have hit 81.

Signing him wasn't a bad idea at the time. Wasting time on him at this point is though. This guy is washed up, cut him loose.

Was he throwing it lefthanded?

fixed?

ok so cubs can release him and open up a roster spot for scott eyre at iowa.

Eyre cant go to Iowa unless he clears waivers. Even as bad as he has been I doubt he would clear waivers, but at this point its time for Hendry to admit his mistakes and move on from him.

Agreed, it wasn't a bad gamble for the price at the time.

Taking a flyer on these castoff-type surgery cases has yielded us Dempster, and Miller. One worked out, one didn't. Not too bad.

Time to release Wade.

I bet he would clear waivers. The best thing that could happen is that someone would pick him up. It's a win-win situation either way. If he clears, he goes to Iowa. We win. If he doesn't, someone else can pick up his nearly 4 million a year salary for this year and next, and we're off of the hook. We win again. I can't see anyone obligating themselves to 3.8xxx million for this year and next year for a reliever with an 8+ ERA.

HAHA! I hit right at 80 several times on the gun just dicking around in college, and I played FIRST BASE for goodness sakes! I've got a noodle arm compared to most.

Stick a fork in him.

It also gave us Williamson, although he's since been traded.

There have been a few (non-knuckleballers) pitchers that threw mostly in the 70-80 mph range that had success. John Tudor to name one. I have my doubts that Miller will though so he should be given his release so I expect the Cubs to call him up and put him in the rotation any day now.

I don't think Trevor Hoffman got over 84 the other night, but he made the Cubs look like they were swinging rubber bats anyway.

Lots of us can hit 80 on the gun, but can we pitch?

Can Miller? His pitching career revolved around him being a fireballer. It's a stretch to think that he can suddenly readjust his pitching style completely not that the main reason for his success is gone.

Shoot, I threw 92 in HS. That was a mere 10 years ago. I prolly could hit 81 and I'd even sign for the minimum.

Would you be able to throw it right down the middle of the plate so the opposition could tee off on it though?

Trevor Hoffman also has one of the best changeups in the game. Which also begs the question -- if a guy tops out in the low 80's with his fastball and his other pitch is a changeup, how can you not hit him?
