While his last outing could be considered an aberration based on the early returns and 'stuff', looks like he's starting to get figured out pretty quickly (Seattle is the first team to face him twice and rock him the hardest last time around).

7, 6 and 5 IP in his last three starts, has walked 1, 4 and 5 batters respectively, with 17 earned runs allowed in those contests altogether.

He's still among the league leaders in K's, however, 10MM+/year for a pitcher with 5.45 ERA (9.00 in his last two) and I'd kill to listen in to what Boston sports radio has to say about it.

Thoughts?

I'm sorry, but I can't help but feel good about this, especially in light of how Lilly and Marquis have performed so far vis-a-vis their contracts and what was said about them.

It's pretty early. Hopefully they have more patience than Cubs fans do.

Boston fans? YEAH RIGHT!

I wonder if he's having issues adjusting to a new routine. Pitching every 5th day, and how he works between outings is completely new to him.

What did they do in Japan?

He'll be fine. The command lapses are probably an aberration.

[rant]

Dice K is a lame name and he hates it too. Call him Dai-san.

Did you ask him?

He'll be just another Japanese "flash in the pan", like all the other transplanted pitchers before him. Just watch....

And why is that?

It's still very early for all three.

Irabu, Nomo, Ishii...I can't think of any Japanese pitchers who enjoyed extended success in the majors. All the more reason why it was foolish to pay $50 million just for the rights to sign him. He's not going to be a 1.50 ERA pitcher, but he won't be a 9.00 ERA pitcher either. All in all, I think he'll be a decent #2 or #3 starter for most teams, but hardly worthy of a total $100 million investment for 5 years of service.

I'm basing my claim off the trend of other pitchers that came to the US from Japan. They get all hyped up about how dominant they were/are, and once their pitching style is figured out, they become mediocre at best. I'm not so impressed with Dice K, and I don't believe his opponents are either. He's hardly worth the amount of $$$ spent on him, especially for the rights just to talk to him... ridiculous!

What's he really costing the BoSox per year, given the bid price they paid in addition to the contract? $20mil/yr?

He's busting out big time at those dollars.

I've noticed ESPN has stopped the 24/7 Dice-K coverage now that he's not cutting it. Mwahahaha. Another ESPN best-laid-plan gone wrong. Gotta love it.

And ESPN has the nerve to bust the Cubs' chops over the Soriano contract??? Give me a break -- at least Soriano has a history of top performance at the major league level.

Japanese baseball players are overrated. They aren't very good. I don't know why they keep on recruiting there. They only do good in Japan, because they're playing people who can't make it to the majors. They should just stick to recruiting in the Western hemisphere and say sayonara to players who come from Japan.

Yeah, I bet if we put together a team of only Japanese players, they'd never be able to beat players from other countries in an international exhibition. They would simply be over matched...

don't forget otsuka, who's pretty durned good in his own right. nomo was rookie of the year and kaz sasaki was one of the best closers in the game as an old man.

japanese players are like american or latino players, some are good and some are bad.

That exhibition means nothing. It was before the baseball season, most of the players the Americans sent weren't even in baseball shape yet. Look, Ichiro and Matsui are good but they are rare. Nomo, yea he won games one year, but where is he now? Otsuka isn't that great. I'm just saying the Red Sox must feel like suckers now paying all that money to a mediocre pitcher. Matsuzaka was good against Japanese hitting, but he can't handle MLB hitting. It's way over his league.
