Marquis already had his good start this year, Cubs lose 11-4

It'll be cold...wind blowing in...he should be fine...he'll save the truly bad games for August...when we're hopefully in contention and it can really hurt us.

It's funny, most of my Yankee fan friends are saying the samething about A-Rod. They all still hate him. I have no idea why.

My, one, Yankee fan friend hates ARod too. She thinks that liking/accepting him takes away from Jeter's adoration--which makes no sense to me but it seems to be a running theme with many in that fandom.

Isn't that kind of like a Cubs fan saying they don't want them to win the WS because then they won't be "loveable loosers" anymore? That's just plain dumb logic.

Cubs fans have said that? Ew.

Press Notes

Three Cubs – Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano – have hit in all seven of the team’s games this season.

Ramirez has a 13-game hitting streak dating back to last season … he hit safely in his final six games of 2006, batting .333 (8-for-24) from September 23-October 1 … the current 13-game hitting streak is his sixth career double-digit hitting streak.

Soriano has 1 hit in each of his first seven games … last season, Seattle’s Jeremy Reed had exactly 1 hit in every game of his season-opening, 10-game hitting streak – it was the longest streak of its kind in 2006 (thanks to Elias Sports Bureau).

The Cubs pitching staff has allowed 51 hits, the third-fewest among National League clubs … overall, Chicago pitching has allowed 10 or more hits just once (13, April 8 in Milwaukee).

The Cubs have limited their opponents to a .229 batting average, third-best in the NL behind the San Diego Padres (.199) and New York Mets (.206).

Last season, the Cubs held opponents to a .255 batting average … coincidentally, that ranked third in the League behind San Diego (.249) and New York (.253).

The Cubs have produced five quality starts in the club’s first seven games of the season … Chicago starters had four straight quality outings from April 4-7 in addition to Ted Lilly’s outing yesterday (6.0 IP, 3 ER).

The five quality starts rank tied for third in the Majors with the Mets, A’s, Cardinals and Rangers … Colorado and Houston lead all clubs with six quality starts apiece.

Chicago’s starters have produced a 4.29 ERA (20 ER/42.0 IP) this season … through the first seven games of last season Cubs starting pitchers had a 4.71 ERA (19 ER/36.1 IP).

More from the press notes.

The Cubs have posted a winning record in April in each of the last 4 seasons into 2007, one of only 4 teams in the majors to turn that trick, joining the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals.

CUBS’ APRIL W-L RECORD

Year....................................April W-L

2007...........................................3-4

2006.........................................13-10

2005.........................................12-11

2004..........................................13-9

2003........................................*15-12

TOTAL..............................56-46 (.549)

*Includes a 1-0 record in March

The Cubs and Astros met for the very first time 45 years ago today … on April 10, 1962, the Cubs played the Houston Colt 45’s at Houston’s Colt Stadium.

The Cubs lost the game, 11-2, as Bobby Shantz earned the win for Houston in the franchise’s inaugural game … Don Cardwell was tagged with the loss for Chicago … on the bright side, Ernie Banks went 2-for-4 with a solo homer off Shantz.

Bit confused as to why Murton isn't starting for the second day in a row. And with that, I'm off to class.

It was reversed in his very limited innings in the major leagues last year, but Sampson's splits in the minors indicate that his right/left split is a decently large one.

Once people form an opinion about a guy, it's nigh impossible to shake.

Its very dissapointing what Lou is doing to Muton, I guess I can only hope Cliff has his usual injury soon so Murt can get some starts.

Was this a serious statement?

Can we please not turn another game thread into a -Lou hates Murton- game thread? It's game 8 of the season...way too early to set start daily complaining.

I don't get Floyd starting again. I understood yesterday with his numbers against Williams, but not today.

It's really quite fun to be at a bar around here when ARod comes up. Peope can be more or less passively watching the game, but when he comes up to the plate the catcalls begin, and I do my part to egg everybody on. I've got a friend who is a Mets fan who feels the same way. While all the Yankees fans we know hate the guy, and can't stand our take on the subject.

Then I formally request that someone set an exact number of games that have to be played before such concerns can be voiced.

The team faced left-handers 1/3 of the time they played last year. This year, they have only faced left-handers 1 out of 8 games. Considering that Murton will start against every left-hander, the fact that after today he'll still have half the starts means that he's likely to get more than half the at-bats once the Cubs start playing against more left-handers. I'm not worried about it right now.

Anyone see a pattern here?

CSN pre-game show is AWFUL.

Dan Plesac knows less about baseball than your average 3 year old.

You sir, are a jerk. I had just gotten Plesac and his horrible broadcasting from spring training out of my mind. Now the horror is rushing back. You should be ashamed of yourself.

That's not the point. There are already threads on this message board dedicated to this topic...it doesn't need infiltrate every single game discussion as well.

How stupid of me to ask a question about the starting lineup for this game in the game thread for this game. My bad.
