Not to blaspheme, since most are excited about him, but what happens if he can't get the job done?

His last stint with the Cubs was great, but what if that was a bit flukey?

I still think the rotation could be the hole on this team.

Hope that Prior makes a comeback? If he is clearly out for the season and Hill stinks, I guess you bring up Guzman. The rotation could easily be very good or very bad, I think that has been established.

I think the title should be changed to "What happens if one of our starters dont produce?"

and that can come down to Miller, Marquis, or maybe even Hill.

Guzman, Prior, Marshall, O'Malley, etc. are available. Maybe even Cotts.

True.

I used Hill as an example because he has some very high expectations based on what he did last year. I hope that is truly the pitcher he is, or he is going to disappoint a lot of people.

If the rotation is a hole on this team, it's more likely that the hole will be from Marquis and Miller/Prior sucking than from Hill sucking.

Hill had about a 3.40 ERA in his minor league time in 2005, with a 194/35 K/BB ratio in 130 innings, and a WHIP around 1.05. That's a good walk rate, a very good WHIP, and a spectacular K rate. In his minor league time in 2006, he had a 1.80 ERA, 135/21 K/BB ratio in 100 innings, and a WHIP of 0.83. Amazing numbers across the board. After his call-up with the Cubs in the second half of 2006, he had a 2.93 ERA, 79/24 K/BB ratio in 80 innings, and a 1.05 WHIP.

Given that information, which would you say is more fluky - the very, very well-pitched 310 innings, or the terribly-pitched first 43 innings in the majors?

Oh, please don't go there. O'Malley makes John Koronka look like a dominating lefty.

Rich Hill has had, in my opinion, a great spring. He has a 16:0 K:BB. Id be more concerned with Ted Lilly than Rich Hill.

there is no reason to be concerned about lilly either. he's had a great spring so far and his new found sinker seems to be effective. gotta love the 4 bb and zero hr's in 19 ip. i think he will prove to be a very solid starter for the cubs.

Well the rotation could very well fall to. .

Zambrano good but not great

Hill faltering leaving a 5th spot of rotating bad rookies and bad prior

Lilly just average

Marquis terrible

Miller just average

but it could also pan out as in my sig. .

A good spring is never a good reason not to be worried about someone.

It is possible he does well in the minors and could spot start if/when the Cubs are in trouble.

On a staff that includes Marquis, if Hill is pitching poorly enough for you to notice he's the one sucking, you can pretty much write off the season.

(Don't think it'll happen, though.)

Why are long pants long? Why are bushes bushy? I mean, you know, if we're gonna get in that area, we're gonna be here all day.

Yeah, theoreticals about the rotation are worthless conversations. Lets go talk about our cars and tvs in social.

what happens if any starter on any team doesn't "produce"? You go to the next guy on the list. That is what we will do if/when that happens.

I interpreted the question as more of-how long do you give Hill? And what happens to him?

I have to give Hill a longer leash than a couple of the other starters-at least half the season. If he's doing terrible at the break though, I really don't know what they would do with him. They could send him to Iowa-but if he dominated, wouldn't that just be the same thing? That would be really difficult on what to do with him at that point.

However, I think a healthy Hill will be a lot better than that, so I really hope it never comes to that.

I agree with Hill there are more questions because he's still young, but essentially you could ask this question on any team, of most any player who isn't a shoe-in to produce. How long should the Brewers give Prince Fielder if he stinks starting this season? How about the Mets -- what if Glavine is just too old now to be effective? How long should they wait to make that decision and go in another direction?

With the Cubs, we can ask this question of a wide variety of our players, including Murton, Floyd, Theriot, Lilly, Marquis, Hill, Miller (really our entire staff outside Z).

After you get your first car and TV, let's chat!

Oh and my post referenced a classic Will Ferrell line done on SNL.
