11-5, with one Sweet 16 team lost.

Duke is quickly entering Kansas/Kentucky/Syracuse territory for me - if I pick them to go long (in this case to the 16), that means they are definitely losing to the first team remotely capable of beating them.

However, nothing else matters if ND can start a nice long tourney run tomorrow against Winthrop.

For anyone interested, both the KC Star and the NY Times ran similar stories on Sherron Collins's (KU's frosh pg) escape from the Chicago projects. I think the KC Star one is better, but both are good.

I know a lot of the UI fans are po'd a him for going to KU, but it's hard to root against a kid who's been through so much. Anyway, here you go. Registration might be required, though your chicagosports.com handle/password should get you into the KC star one.

I was 12-4 in my NSBB Yahoo Group (no Sweet 16 teams lost) and 11-5 in the Cubsin07 Yahoo Group (with ODU out of the Sweet 16).

I've done better

Great breakdown for the Illini game tomorrow.

http://subscr.techsideline.com/news_archiv...rticle-2760.php

The key is going to be how Chester and McBride guard Tech's guard. If they can hold their own defensively, the Illini will win. If Tech's guards have a good game, Va Tech will have the advantage.

My prediction:

Illinois 62

Tech 56

I think we have to take care of the ball. My prediction. PAIN.

solid start for me... 14-2 with all sweet 16 teams intact. I have more upsets picked today, including Holy Cross, Albany, Arkansas and Illinois. Plus, I won some cash as Indiana-Gonzaga easily made the under (142 points). The only annoying part is that the two other games I really wanted to bet I would've had right (Butler -1.5, BC -3) but the guy wasn't getting to Vegas early enough to place those bets.

This is a fascinating article about how a group of officials from the NCAA monitors certain aspects of the tournament:

http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070316/SPORTS/703160429/1004/SPORTS

Here are a few snippets I found interesting:

On the big screen, divided into quarters for each game in progress, there was a Hooters commercial with Dick Vitale. The NCAA had rejected it for use during this event, one of the most popular sports events on the planet and the reason for this annual high-profile gathering.

Talking about the same thing:

By late afternoon, it wasn't clear how the ad had made it on the air. But it was clear that the NCAA didn't want it there.

And one more:

Yet another task was making a list of "key moments" in the game -- a monster dunk, a controversial call, a game-winning shot. At the end of the day, a list of all the key moments would go to someone who would then check the popular Internet video posting site YouTube for copyright infringement.

On the radio this mrning they were saying that this was the worst tournament ever. It seems to me that they were saying the same thing the last few years.

Why do people have this feeling about the tournament? This occured to me earlier. The last couple tournaments have seen a lot more respect for mid majors while big conference at large teams are getting more double digit seedings (eg Illinois at 12). The net result of this is fewer upsets. Basically, by showing the deserved respect for mid majors they're watering down the lower seeds. Thus the perception that this is "The worst tournament ever".

Haha somehow I end up with a perfect first day. #1 on facebook sure does look nice, but I have a feeling that'll end pretty damn soon...

I thought I only missed one, and then I checked and realized I hadn't picked VCU and Indiana like I thought. Oh well...that's what I get for doing my bracket in 3 minutes before class.

I definitely think the fact that there were only 2 close games in the last minute out of 16 really hurt the day yesterday.

Looking back on the first round last year:

You had 8 seed GW beating 9 seed UNC-Wilmington by 3

12 seed Texas A&M upset Syracuse

14 seed Northwestern State beating 3 seed Iowa by 1

10 seed NC State beating 7 seed California

8 seed Kentucky beating 9 seed UAB in a close game by 5

11 seed George Mason beating 6 seed Michigan State

3 seed UNC only beating 14 seed Murray State by 4

2 seed Tennessee needing a last second shot to beat 15 seed Winthrop by 2

12 seed Montana beating 5 seed Nevada

4 seed BC beating 13 seed Pacific in double OT

11 seed Wisconsin-Milwaukee beating 6 seed Oklahoma

7 seed Georgetown beating 10 seed Northern Iowa in a close game by 5

9 seed Bucknell beating 8 seed Arkansas by 4

13 seed Bradley beating 4 seed Kansas

6 seed Indiana needing a 3 pointer with less than 10 seconds to play to beat 11 seed SDSU

3 seed Gonzaga beating 14 seed Xavier by only 4

10 seed Alabama beating 7 seed Marquette

So last year in the first round-8 double digit seeds advanced. Also, several top ranked teams received scares, with a 15, two 14s, a 13, an 11 , and a 10 almost advancing.

Also, 3 of the 4 8/9 games were quality games.

So far this year you have one double digit seed advancing, and 1 good 8/9 game. So today would have to be upsets galore to even get close to last year.
