It's an odd tournament, in that all the better teams (in terms of team efficiency) actually won their games yesterday, save 1. Even then, it was the closest game of the night.

If that is to continue holding to form, there will be quite a few more seed upsets today.

- Georgia Tech is a more efficient team than UNLV.

- Purdue is a more efficient team than Arizona.

- Illinois is a more efficient team than Virginia Tech (about 99.99% of this is their defense).

- Arkansas is a more efficient team than USC.

- Creighton is a more efficient team than Nevada.

Closest matchups of the day are Illinois-VT, Arkansas-USC, Purdue-Arizona, and Kentucky-Villanova

I hope there are a couple dozen people who smuggled in chief illini (or whatever he was called) outfits to put on and charge the floor if illinois wins.

On the radio this mrning they were saying that this was the worst tournament ever. It seems to me that they were saying the same thing the last few years.

Why do people have this feeling about the tournament? This occured to me earlier. The last couple tournaments have seen a lot more respect for mid majors while big conference at large teams are getting more double digit seedings (eg Illinois at 12). The net result of this is fewer upsets. Basically, by showing the deserved respect for mid majors they're watering down the lower seeds. Thus the perception that this is "The worst tournament ever".

I definitely think the fact that there were only 2 close games in the last minute out of 16 really hurt the day yesterday.

Looking back on the first round last year:

11 seed George Mason beating 6 seed Michigan State

I was in a bar last year with some friends watching this game. Near the end i said that one of these days one of these Mid-Majors are going to the Final Four. I didnt say GM was going but these Mid-Majors are not the same programs 10-15 years ago. I like GM because they had size and athleticism. Old days the Mid Majors had one or the other but never both, all those kids went to the big school.

I was really surprised at all the blowouts last night. First round blowout are few and far between nowadays.

There are years the first round sucks but saturday and sunday are amazing or the tournament comes out like a house of fire and chills in the later rounds. One day is too early to tell.

I can absolutely guarantee that it won't happen. Chief Illiniwek only appeared at halftime. No one that held the Chief in high regard would charge the court in a Chjief costume.

Then there's also the part about Illinois actually winning which would be a pretty big upset considering Illinois has trouble scroing more than 50 points against teams that don't stink.

Nice to see my surprise Sweet Sixteen pick look like complete garbage in the early going. 19-2 Virginia in the first 8 minutes of the game.

Albany

That was a great pick.

Great, I get Billy Packer announcing Georgia Tech-UNLV. I'm so excited. He'll also be doing Wisconsin, Kansas, and Kentucky-Villanova.

What about MMOD? I took the day off and have my laptop on Memhis and TV on GTEch.

I'm more interested in a protest than a tradition I was never part of.

In a bracket with Kansas, UCLA, GTown, or Florida as the 1-2 seeds, I'd have Virginia in the Final Four.

UNLV doesn't realize that you can shoot from inside the three point line. They've attempted 20 FG's and 16 of them have been beyond the arc.

Fortunately Georgia Tech can't make a shot and UNLV is up 11.

why are they still showing the GT/UNLV game here? Is chicago in the market? there's a 3 point game with a huge underdog winning going on!

I would love to see Memphis go down here. I have them losing in the next round anyway and it would be the upset of the tournament.

I have them losing in my sweet 16 to texas AM in all my brackets, apparently. Go N texas!

I do too. I always root for the little guy if that team isnt an Elite 8 or final four team, even more if its not a sweet 16 team like i have memphis bowing out next round.

I've never seen someone so obsessed with offense like Billy Packer is. He's ragging on the UNLV-Georgia Tech game for not being high-scoring.

He was doing the same thing during the Big Ten Tournament. During the Illinois-Wisconsin game, he was ripping both teams for not pushing the ball and getting any fast break points. He never mentioned or gave credit to the defenses for getting back. end rant

North Texas-Memphis looks like the only exciting game out of this first batch.

I don't know about that-UNLV-GT looks like it could be close in the second half-UNLV is only up by 5.

wait.... i have Memphis in the Sweet 16. Screw them, i hope they lose. Not many are going to have nevada going to the sweet 16 (except for you Soccer, but you arent in my $ pool ;-) ). I have A and M going to the elite 8 so having Memphis gone is good.

I'm relying on some slow internet scoring updates here...

Me too. I think either Nevada or Creighton may beat them. I wish IU could've drawn Memphis as the 2-seed instead of UCLA. Oh well.
