Rawlings will have fans vote on a 50th anniversary Gold Glove team:

Now fans will decide by voting on the all-time Gold Glove team.

The ballot will be unveiled at Times Square in New York on Tuesday morning. Three members of the original Gold Glove team -- Willie Mays, Frank Malzone and Minnie Minoso -- are scheduled to attend and cast the first votes.

From more than 250 players who have won a Gold Glove, the panel identified 18 outfielders, six players at each infield position, five catchers and three pitchers.

Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith, who won 13 Gold Gloves, is on the ballot, along with Yankees star Derek Jeter, who has won three so far. Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench won 10 Gold Gloves; current star Ivan Rodriguez of the Tigers has 12.

Who would have guessed that Derek Jeter would make the ballot?

Voters can voice their opinions online at Rawlings Gold Glove Website. Polls aren't up yet, but should be once the official ballots are announced.

DJ at 2b, or CF, ala Robin Yount, he would be a deserving GG, but Derek Jeter at SS for GG, he gets it more for the team his on, instead of actually being a GREAT defender. Besides...Jeter ain't even the best defensive SS on his very own team, and yet they chose to ignore ARod. Hmmm?

Why vote when you can just look at Rate2 or FRAR or some other stat that doesn't require you to watch a game to see who the best fielder apparently is!

Why look at a stat when you can just watch every game in the history of time to see who the best fielder is!

In all seriousness, the most reliable fielding metrics are based on play-by-play data.

1b Who cares its 1b

2b Ryno

ss Omar Vizquel or Loiue Aparicio(the anti-Ozzie vote)

3b Brooks

LF If we are actually using LFers Barry Bonds

CF This is actually a really great position. Too bad someone like Cesar Geronimo or Amos Otis wont even get on the ballot. I predict Griffey jr wins. I didnt see Willie Mays play in his prime. I think there are several CF who were better than Griffey but wont make the cut.

RF Clemente. Again I only seen him at the end. even then he was great. I think he is widely regarded as the best defensive RFer ever though

C Bench was great but IRod is better.

P Jim Kaat.

While going over this a little I forgot how good the Big Red Machine was defensively up the middle. Bench, Morgan, Concepcion and Geronimo. That was probably the best group on one team that I could remember.

I honestly don't know if I am biased, but I could not see the Pitcher spot going to anyone but Maddog. Watching him over the years, it is unbelievable how he never fails to make the play. He is in the perfect position every pitch.

my prediction:

Alomar gets the nod at 2b. So called experts break out the ol' "Sandberg never dove for the ball" routine.

That, or Maz gets the nod because of that famous homer.

Are they trying to get you to build the best overall team possible from a list of gold glovers, or pick the best team only taking defense into account? I'd assume the latter, but the former would make for a much more interesting discussion. I love Sandberg, but his defense is lacking when compared to a Mazeroski.

My instincts tell me:

1B: Keith Hernandez or George Scott

2B: Bill Mazeroski or Robby Alomar

SS: Ozzie Smith or Mark Belanger

3B: Brooks Robinson, pretty easily

C: Pudge, Bench finishes second

OF: Mays, Clemente, Dewey Evans (possible that Andruw Jones, Torii Hunter or even Griffey could be in the mix too)

P: who knows

The outfield discussion should only include 6 players:

Gary Maddox

Willie Mays

Curt Flood

Andruw Jones

Junior Griffey

Clemente

I'll take Jones, Mays, and Maddox.
