I figure it will either be Izturis or one of the (projected) starters. I think Marquis and Lilly will take the expected load of crap, but I have this ingrained expectation that Izturis will see way more starts than any one (or possibly two) starters, and that alone will make him this year's Neifi Macias Alfonseca.

Don't forget Estes and Rnez. :D

I can't think of the childish nickname for Izturis, what is it again?

Izzy, as in "Izzy going to the DL again?"

I thought it was "Izzy gonna make another out en route to another 0-4 game?"

Izzy going to ground out 4-3 or 6-3?

It's obvious that it's either Marquis or Izturis - I voted Marquis, largely because Izturis is (thankfully) a huge injury risk, and might not play as much. Plus, when Marquis is off, he's gonna be REALLY off. We're gonna cringe with every pitch of every start.

I voted for Izzy. Before last season, Marquis looked like he could develop into a descent pitcher. I have a good feeling last year was a fluke. On the other hand, Izzy's best season wasn't even that good. Therefore he gets my vote.

Marquis will be the whipping boy for the next 2 years, but after that Soriano will be the whipping for the next 6 years. He very likely will become the Cubs' Alltime Franchise Whipping Boy and maintain that distinction for the next 50 years.

I think they will end up tearing down Wrigley and salting the earth because of the Soriano deal.

I went with Izturis...something tells me that Marquis just might be borderline acceptable this year in the 5 spot. If so, thats a great over achievment from current expectations....plus, he hits better than Izturis.

I would have spit coke out of my nose if I was drinking it when I read this. My disappointment that Izturis is on the roster continues into 2007.

Maybe I need someone to be the whipping boy. It's like I can't even root for the guy to be good because I detest him that much. Maddux for Izturis. Unbelievable. It's a good thing I was away on business for nearly two weeks when that trade went down. Someone might have gotten hurt.

It's like "crappy shortstops" are a required roster spot with this club.

Big masher at 1b? Check!

Speedy CFer? Check!

Crappy SS? Check!

With the season nearly two months old I think it's interesting to look at this again. We now know the answer is Eyre, and he wasn't even an option in this poll. Izturis was a good pick; Marquis has been anything but a whipping boy this year.

Before the season, I'd have definitely said Marquis with Izturis being a close second. Now, I'm going with Jones. He's stunk out loud this year and is paid about as much as Marquis, and he's currently blocking our best prospect. We'd be better off just playing Pie. Izturis's OPS is higher than Jones's at this point (they're still both behind Zambrano and Marquis in OPS). Can Theriot play CF?

Piniella too if you include the manager.

Marquis has been lousy in 3 of his last 4 starts. He could still be a whipping boy. Izturis has been shockingly durable. No DL time yet. Still a bad player, but there are worse problems. Eyre is an aging overweight pitcher who was bad last year(.800 OPS allowed) so I expected he would suck again but jeez has he ever been awful. Sori is still my whipping boy though. He's no better than average for his position both offensively and defensively and his contract is a franchise crippler. He's 31, so he'll most likely get worse rather than better. Players like Eyre are minor problems compared to Soriano.

Just wanted to give this a bump and express how shocked I am Jones only got 7 votes somehow.

With Izturis on the roster, I'm not that shocked, especially since Jones put up acceptable numbers last year. Marquis' turn south over the last few starts could have him rising to the occasion, especially if the Cubs start winning games and he becomes the streak stopper.

The Barrett episode goes to show that you can just never tell who the fanbase is going to turn on next. Barrett wasn't even in this poll.

Barrett also wasn't really boo'd by the fans, nor did the fans really hate him. The management wanted to get rid of him. A lot of fans did as well, myself included, but he didn't hear it on the field as much as someone like Izturis or Jones do. People wanted Barrett traded, but they didn't want to have them hung from the gallows (i.e. Jacque Jones 2006, Corey Patterson 2005)

Not to mention that Eyre isn't even on the list.

How did that happen?
