Please refresh me on Tom House. I remember the name, but can't recall if it's for positive or negative reasons.

He was the pitching guru who took a seemingly raw Mark Prior (who was drafted by the Yanks in 98, I believe) and in three yrs, transformed Prior into arguably the "most hyped" college pitcher in yrs. Not saying Prior didn't deserve it at the time, but considering his production at the major league level....

But Tom House has also work with the likes of Nolan Ryan, Curt Schilling, and Randy Johnson. So, House (not the tv show) is pretty good guy to work with.

Considering what he did at the outset of his career, I think the hype was obviously much deserved. It's not a lack of ability/effectiveness that has marred recent seasons.

Is this earlier or later than when Prior was throwing off the mound last season? I think we have to consider this before declaring good news right?

Well Prior hasn't caught the eastern equine encephalomyelitis virus (yet), so it's progress.

Tom House is also a self-admitted former steroids user if I remember correctly. I also remember him speaking out against roid use.

I'll still consider him a very good pitcher, FWIW. He just needs some luck.

I think House has been working with Prior since highschool or before.

Prior is a Todd Morinavich type without the proclivity to abuse drugs, and probably with less artistic talent.

Hah.

I wasn't hallucinating in '03. Neither were you. Nobody on the planet saw Prior's current state coming. He was the Titanic: can't be sunk, mechanics are too good. But he still sunk.

His talent was real. The hype was real too----but he was every bit what they said he was until the injuries.

What's the question?

Prior has been working with House since the Summer heading into his Junior year of HS.

My information regarding Prior would be outdated since it was Oct/Nov., I assume he's still building up strength in his shoulder. Too much time has gone by since then to make any type of prediction.

No doubt Prior's talent is real. I was just commenting on his being groomed to be a pitcher at a very early age, just like Morinavich.

I still have a copy of the Sun-Times from the day of NLDS Game Three. There's a big double truck spread detailing Prior's perfect mechanics.

Journalists are so smart.

House is the author of at least two pitching manuals besides running his school. His degree is in Biomechanics and that is what his pitching theory is built on. The most efficient use of the muscles in the body to reproduce the same pitching motion each time with the least strain on the body.

The first book, which I tried to read, was written for other biomechanics pitching coaches. Seriously the book required that you learn and understand biomechanics to really get the best use of it. The second was an improvement as House explained his terms and broke them down so that you can understand and apply them better. It is also an interactive book of sorts as he uses examples that you mimic to feel as well as read about.

Hey, even perfect mechanics have trouble with a fullspeed runner and a screaming line drive. What are the odds a pitcher would suffer two such injuries in such a short span of time?

so you don't think prior has good mechanics?

Wasnt Prior not yet throwing by the time Spring Training started last year? IIRC, the concern started when time started going by after P&C reported and Prior had yet to take the mound. If so, this appears to be great news and I am guilty of getting excited.

If memory serves, I seem to recall him saying he tried steroids very briefly and couldn't discern a real benefit from them.
