perhaps after he craps out at the AS break they'll trade him for Wade Boggs and a side of rice pilaf

Way too much. I think Boggs could out-hit Sammy.

Easily... however I was referencing an old Denny's commercial where Tony Gwynn is giving a press conference about how he was traded for Sammy Sosa and they asked what else and he said "Some scrambled eggs" or something. It was to promote their grand slam baseball cards and stuff. I'll never forget the end where he and Sosa are walking down the corridor and Sammy says in his broken english "Don't take it so hard, Tony! I got traded for Wade Boggs, and a side of rice pilaf!"

Good times.

I think it's a huge mistake signing Sammy. Not just because of his age/decline, but because he's a "groove" hitter. His hits and homer come in bunches when he just hits that "zone" (aside from 1998-2000, when he was ALWAYS in that zone).

A full year off? It might take him two seasons to get into a zone that would even make him an average corner outfielder.

And that's aside from the extra-curricular issues he'll bring. You put him back in baseball, and he's suddenly #1A in the steroid discussion behing Barry again.

I think Sosa has to get over the steroid thing and the beaning along with age to be successful. I'm curious on how hard he worked out over the off season.

I think he would definitely need to get over it. But he's always been thin-skinned, and even working out all year wouldn't help him get his timing back.

But he's been given a sort-of free pass the past year on the steroids thing because he was out of baseball (like McGwire). he plays again, he's under the microscope again.

You bet the press is going to be looking at him and if he has no muscle mass even more so. The "I wanted to lose weight or be in better shape" thing isn't going to fly. Off course if he makes the team and hits 150 people might just ignore him until he's waived.

You think he's been given a free pass? From every article I've read about future HOFers, he's always been listed with McGuire and Palmiero as people who have the steroids scandal looming over them.

In fact, I'm convinced that he'll receive the same level of media attention when his chance at the HOF comes up as McGuire did, and his testimony to Congress (or lack thereof) will receive the same spotlight.

I'd like to see Sammy back in the big leagues. He could help the Rangers out I'm sure if he will accept a low paying contract.

I think he's been given a 'comparatively' free pass. the controversy over him is NOTHING Like it's been for Bonds. It WILL if he's playing. And you're right- it will rain * on him when he's HoF eligible, too, regardless. Since McGwire retired first, though, he'll get the bulk of the heat and public debate...until Bonds.

Sammy hasn't faced Bonds's style controversy because A) he hasn't had a book written about him that essentially proves he used steroids, B) he's not approaching Aaron's record, and C) he's not a prick (at least, not the type of prick that the media is obsessed with anyway).

Of all the teams Sammy could join, the Rangers would please me most. I get to see a few Rangers games each year, and I'd love one more opportunity to see Sosa play.

He can still hammer lefties, or at least he did well against them in 2005. I think he's got enough in the tank to be the RH part of a platoon at DH/OF for the Rangers. That park is an excellent hitters environment as well.

I hope that this works out.

True, but what opinion will they have if Sammy does hit 40/50 homeruns for the next two years?

Do their opinions change?
