don't most people earn raises based on what they DID? i think so

I think most people get raises based upon what they have done.

I believe that most people get new jobs that pay more based upon what they could do for the new company.

Ok, this one from Crasnick is just funny....

The agent also said that Barry Bonds would much rather stay in San Francisco than sign with Oakland. "He doesn't want to drive across the Bay, he doesn't want to play in a dilapidated stadium, and he doesn't want to wear the white shoes," the agent said.

Is his agent losing it? First he freaked out when the Giants as expected declined to offer arbitration to Bonds. Now he disses the A's now that they have turned their attention to Piazza. It looks like Bonds is going to need a second job next year to supplement (pun intended) his income.

Maddux to Padres close...

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6238114?FSO1&ATT=HMA

The Padres are closing in on a major off-season coup, nearing an agreement with free-agent right-hander Greg Maddux, FOXSports.com has learned.

The deal, which would be a significant blow to the Dodgers, the Padres' NL West rival, will be for either one or two years, or possibly one year with a club option.

Pitching for both the Cubs and Dodgers in 2006, Maddux posted a record of 15-14 with a 4.20 earned run average and 117 strikeouts in 210 innings pitched.

Maddux, who has a home in the San Diego area, has a record of 333-203 and an ERA of 3.30 over his 21-year career.

Now the Astros are interested in Schmidt. :x First the Cards and now the Astros. Per Rotoworld

this might mean the inside rumors are that the Cubs are closest so their division rivals are chiming in to drive up the price.

just a thought.

I like the way you think. Hopefully that is the case because if the Astros or Cards get Schmidt and we get Lilly, it will be rough.

Jim needs to pony up. 4/60. I want a WS. Schmidt is a solid #2 and IMO will be worth about 3 years of that.

Agreed. Paying for players in FA is so much more complicated than comparing a price tag to a stat line. Maybe Schimdt, in a vacuum, is not worth $60M or whatever. But the difference between the Cubs rotation with him compared to without him is immensely significant. I'm not saying he's the missing link to WS ring, but he changes the dynamic of the team. All of a sudden, it seems like any price (remember, it's not OUR money at stake here) would be a worthwhile deal.

I say see what it will take to get him for three years, Pay it.

The Angels are shopping Bartolo Colon, a source told MLB.com.

His shoulder is a concern, but his potential value to the Cubs should be something Hendry considers.

Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown reports that the Blue Jays, Cubs, Orioles, Mariners and Giants all appear to be willing to go to four years for Gil Meche.

We're more than a little skeptical about this, as there's been no indication that the Mariners have stepped up with that kind of offer to keep him. The Blue Jays appear to be the favorites to sign Meche, especially if the Cubs grab Ted Lilly.

4 years for Meche but not Schmidt? Hendry deserves to lose his job.

I don't thinkt the Cubs have enough talent to acquire Colon.

His weight is more of a concern that his shoulder.

He is Ruben Quevedo fat.

Meche is 5 years younger. That could be a reason why Hendry doesn't want to go long on Schmidt.

He does need to lose some weight to take pressure off of his back. But he did have a rotator cuff injury with the Halos this year that caused him to miss the remainder of the season. He would be a gamble I would be willing to take.

Uh, Colon makes $14M in 2007, and isn't gonna be throwing a ball til January. Unless the Angels eat about $12M of that deal, it's a bad idea. Colon is a longshot to throw 140 innings this year. I'd say he's a long shot to throw half of that.
