Barry Bonds has reportedly left the hotel where the winter meetings are being held, but not before two baseball men told ESPN's Jayson Stark that they were told by Bonds' agents that there would be an announcement of where Bonds would play next year by Wednesday night.

Grain of salt. It's unclear whether Bonds has legitimate interest from any team other than the Giants, though agent Jeff Borris said he was in Orlando to meet with at least two other teams. According to Stark, one baseball man who spoke with the Giants' brass said the Giants considered Bonds' arrival to be nothing more than particularly inspired "gamesmanship."

Interesting...

Yesterday on ESPNews, Tim Kurkjian didn't think there was any possibility that Bonds would play somewhere other than SF.

I don't think so either, if for no other reason than he's hated everywhere else in America.

According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, free agent Ted Lilly has told the Yankees he'd join them if they're willing to give him a four-year, $40 million contract.

Lilly can probably get $1 million more per year from the Cubs, but he'd apparently prefer to join the Bombers. It's not yet clear whether the Yankees, who would actually be paying $56 million once the luxury tax is factored in, will take him up on his offer. They may have only until tonight to decide.

I don't think there is either. But the cosmos has been messing with my brain lately.

Quit ordering them and switch to a real drink.

Touchee

Speaking of which, I am out of liquor. The winter meetings are always hard on me.

If we miss Lilly AND Meche, what does that mean for us? (And don't just grumble Marquis, I am sincerely curious)

Here's how the chat went with one of my cards fan friends just now:

vhs authoritah: if the Cubs don't get Lilly or Schmidt, what do they do?

WinnieThaPujols: Marquis

WinnieThaPujols: ^_^

WinnieThaPujols: ^_^

WinnieThaPujols: ^_^

WinnieThaPujols: ^_^

vhs authoritah: oh god

WinnieThaPujols: you think that reported interest was just BS?

vhs authoritah: marquis & mulder m i rite?

WinnieThaPujols: ^^

Honestly, I think we end up with one of Mulder/Marquis and overpay for one of Jennings, Westbrook, or Penny -- preferably Penny.

Hendry becomes even more desperate and throws 6 years and $120 million at Zito, meaning we can't afford to sign Z to an extension. Z signs with the Cardinals next offseason and tortures us for the next decade.

I'd like Suppan over both Lilly and Meche.

And then of course, hopefully a trade that would bring Garland/Garcia or Westbrook here.

Lilly and Suppan have fairly similar stats, I dont have the groundball/flyball ratios but Suppan had a slightly better era and gave up 7 less homeruns in sligtly more innings. Suppan doesnt strike out as many people as Lilly, they both are blah. Suppan is going to probably be a better value but is not left handed, if that really matters.

From Rotoworld:

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, free agent Gil Meche likely will sign with the Cubs.

The rumor has been that Meche would pick Toronto, but a member of the Blue Jays said it was Toronto's understanding that Meche would be signing with the Cubs. We're not sure whether this is a sign Ted Lilly is going to end up with the Yankees. The Cubs have been hoping to sign both.

Posted
Suppan is not better than Lilly...

Exactly. If the Cubs lose at on both Lilly and Meche, the Cubs should focus on trying to get Jason Jennings, Jake Westbrook, and perhaps even Joe Blanton.

So how again was signing Soriano going to make the Cubs an attractive spot for FA? I mean Lilly prefers to pitch in NY or the West Coast (so the Cubs would be "last choice" for Lilly), Jason Schmidt stays in Cali and will sign with LA (he won't sign with the Cards) and Gil Meche is close to signing a deal in Toronto. I know I should be happy that these mediocre pitchers are signing elsewhere (excluding Schmidt), but wasn't signing Soriano suppose to make the Cubs an attractive place to sign?
