If Drew is out of the picture then trade for V Wells. How much better is Sarge Jr over Jones really?

It would be harder to replace the players that we would have to give up for Wells than to simply sign a CF I think.

How much better is Wells over either of them?

Lots and lots.

I mean sure, Wells is better, and he's younger and a better defender to boot, but Barrett + Pie/Veal and then sign him to a monster extension better? I don't think so.

J.D. Drew is not playing for the Cubs in the near future. Period. You don't need stats. You don't need to know who likes or doesn't like him. The Cubs are not interested in signing him.

I knew the stories that Hendry was interested in the best player on the market were too good (and out of character) to be true.

Any updates on what is going on with Drew?

Not happening with the Cubs. He's played for three big-league managers and none of the three has been fond of him. His most recent manager was in the Cubs system as a coach. I'm sure they still talk. So no, he's not coming here.

Quite a contrast with the kind words said about Soriano by some in the Nats organization.

I heard today that Soriano is the first one to the park everyday on the Nats........ that must be how batting order is determined??

Is that why Neifi was batting 2nd because he rode shotgun with Pierre?

I think Jones is a better player than Mathews overall.

I as well.

Not to mention that Jones is making what, six mil next year? Matthews wants 3/39.

Hey. I'm no fan of Hendry, but he got Soriano. That's not too bad.

I agree but IMO Jones and a lot of players that are his age that are signed for 2 or more years are going to piss and moan because of the money being thrown out right now. He missed his money by being a free agent a year early and I'm curious on how he'll react to it, especially if the fans continue to "get" on him.

You could be right. I'm guessing the new-"ness" of Jacque has worn off, and fans will be watching Soriano for production rather than Jacque.

Looking at the landscape and knowing Drew is not a possibility, I'm thinking the best route is to place Jones in CF and just concentrate on pitching. Maybe I'm crazy, but I really think Jacque has a shot to thrive in CF.

Anyway, Murt - Jones - Soriano looks much better to me than Murt - Pierre - Jones, even though it's only one player difference. I like the positioning better. Never liked Pierre in CF, his arm was far too weak to play that far from the infield.

Out of our power hitters(Lee, Ramirez, Soriano, Barrett), Barrett is the only one with a very severe platoon split. I guess DeRosa and Murton are both tough on LHP too(and given their total production, light on RHP). If we trade for a LH CF that at least has the potential to hit RHP with authority(hello Covelli) I think we'll be alright.

For a guy with such a cool first name, I don't get why he goes by such a wiener nick name. I can understand it when you are little, but come on, hes an adult now.

Phil Rodgers' column today says the Cubs want to trade Jacque. So who would play CF? Lugo?

I really don't get ideas of starting Lugo or Soriano in CF. They have COMBINED to play....wait for it....ONE game in CF in their careers. I know, let's sign JD Drew to play catcher! Maybe Vicente Padilla can spell Izturis at SS!

The only reason I can see why they want to do that is to not block Pie. They think if they start Lugo in CF in 2007 that they then can move him to SS after 2007 when Izturis's contract runs out and Pie is ready to play CF.

If Hendry's going to experiment in CF just to keep Pie ready for '08, then he ought to come clean and admit we're on a 2-year rebuilding plan. With the moves he's been making lately everyone has the impression we're trying to win this year. But ultimately, launching Jones out of town leaves us with a mid-power lineup offensively and the pitching is still bad. It reeks of 3rd place. I realize there's work to be done with the pitching staff yet, but dumping a decent power hitter with outfield experience for a guy who can't hit for power and hasn't played CF is counterproductive.

As for Drew, he's out and he was really the best option. Which also would point to keeping Jones as the preferrable policy.

Ah - thanks.

Edit: Jacque to the Sox is interesting. Would they give us prospects in return?

I think this is a key to JD(from the article)

"His nickname in the Dodger clubhouse, according to one big league coach, was "Nancy Drew," and according to one major leaguer who has played against Drew for much of his career, one Dodger player greeted the news of Drew's departure by phoning friends in jubilation.

Some of that same undercurrent was present when he was with the Cardinals. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Buzz Bissinger, who spent much of the 2003 season with the Cardinals for a book entitled "Three Nights in August," wrote in the book that Cardinals manager Tony La Russa "wondered whether Drew's underlying ailment, like it was for so many young players coming into sudden millions, was an absence of sustained passion that had no medical remedy." Rebuilding? I don't think so. His actions thus far are quintessential reloading.

I view a move for Lugo in CF as akin to slamming on the brakes. I agree he's been loading up, but we finished so far from playoff contention it will take a hell of a train to pull us all the way back in 1 season.
