"Boston has offered J.D. Drew a huge contract – and Lou Piniella’s Cubs have matched it."

My question is which Boston offer has Hendry supposedly matched? Is it the 4 year $48M we were hearing yesterday, or the 2 year $30M I'm hearing today?

It's getting mighty interesting.

Hoops, get on this- i mean, do you realize how important you are to all of us this time of year- GET ON THE HORN and get some info:)- Seriously though, you are hearing 2 and 30M? i would be open to that deal with an option year tacked on-

Wow - very very interesting ... c'mon JD you know you like Chicago

I vividly remember a Cubs Cards game in 2001 or 2002 when JD and Albert hit back-to-back jacks off Farnsworth on 98 and 99mph fastballs. Farns just looked shell-shocked, like wtf is going on.

JD is a professional hitter the Cubs desperately need. Trivia q: when was the last time the Cubs had a guy w/a lifetime IsoD > 0.100 in their everyday lineup?

Bellhorn?

Yeah, I'm really smart....and modest.

if 2/30 is the new offer, why not just up it to 3/45 and see if that gets it done.

In my opinion- as far as satisfying a team's particular needs and given the current free agent market, that would be the best free agent signing of the winter in MLB.

It does appear that the Cubs are very active in this Drew bidding. I too would much prefer him over Soriano, if forced to choose. I'd offer 3 years and $40 million - $12M, $13M and $14M with a $15M option, which can automatically vest with an appropriate amount of games played in 2009 or a $1M buyout.

The only problem I have with Drew is can he stay healthy. I prefer Drew to play RF rather than CF. Trade Jones and some young arms to Cleveland for Westbrook and Luna. Luna would provide insurance for SS, 2B, and 3B.

Why monkey around. 3/45 and be done with it...Scotty B is going to drag this one out a bit.

It was Tracy Ringolsby, who first suggested 2 years and $30M.

"Outfielder J.D. Drew, who opted out of the remaining three years and $33 million on his Dodgers contract, is expected to sign a two-year, $30 million deal with Boston."

Wow...

It looks like they're actively pursuing both Drew and Soriano at the same time. Doesn't seem like either is a backup plan to the other.

The thought of a Murton/Drew/Soriano outfield makes me happy...

In another thread--maybe the rotoworld rumors thread, not sure--there was talk about Murton possibly being used in drawing Westbrook from Cleveland. If they're shopping Murton as trade bait, then we'll likely end up settling for Soriano/Drew/Jones.

It would be great if the Indians wanted Jones instead of possibly Murton.

The problem with trading Murton is, he'll probably be undervalued on the market. I hope they don't wind up shipping him off, if that's the case, if only because we won't get a fair return.

Oh well, I could live with Soriano, Drew, Jones.. :)

Haha, yeah that would be nice. What's that payroll going to be this year again? 150 mil?

Still 2 or 3 SPs to sign, Jim.

Supposedly Cleveland's interested in a backup SS and (surprise surprise) isn't terribly impressed with what we have to offer. Not sure how or why Murton's name was thrown in there, but he's probably the next step up that a GM not named Hendry would even consider going with.
