if I were the Cubs with the money available and the crop of free agents, I would be inclined to offer crap as far as players and just pay the salary. Personally, I would stay away from Sheffield though.

Per ESPN Insider:

Where will Sheff go?

Nov 6 - Now that the Yankees have picked up Sheffield's $13 million option, speculation is rampant about where he might end up next.

Newsday reported that Sheffield's agent, Rufus Williams recently gave the Yankees a list of teams that Sheffield preferred if he were to be traded.

Williams declined to list the teams, but the Chicago Tribune reported Sunday that the Cubs and White Sox are on Sheffield's list, and that the Tigers and Padres are likely to be included as well.

Certainly a combination of Sheffield and whatever platoon (read: injury replacement for 15 games), seems like a better combination than throwing money at Carlos Lee.

Shall we start the Gary Sheffield for Freddy Garcia rumours? Sox need a LF (or so you would think with all the Podsednik trade or non-tender stories). Yankees are definitely looking to upgrade the rotation. Sox want to move a starter to make room for McCarthy. Both Sheff and Freddy have one year left on their contracts - money is pretty close with Sheff at $13M and Freddy at $10M.

I'm sure the Yanks prefer an NL club. I think the Cubs should look into getting him. If he's healthy, he'll probably put up OPS numbers as good as CLee or Soriano without the headache of a long term overpaid deal.

maybe we could get involved as a middle guys with them and the Orioles-

Yanks get - Benson+Eyre+Cedeno

Cubs get- Tejada

Orioles get- Sheffield+Izturis+Jones+Marshall

the O's get 3 ML starters and 2 young arms-plus money is about the same, The Yankees get a starter in benson but really get stronger in the pen with Eyre and add Cedeno for bench depth-

THe Cubs shed some payroll but pick up Tejada-

That's been the talk for a week or so.

Sorry, didn't know. Haven't seen any stories about Garcia for Sheffield here. Garcia and Crede were brought up in the ARod rumors.

would be a nice addition to the yanks collection of washed up pitchers.

I can't see how trading a good reliever, a potential 4th starter and a bunch of trash for Tejada would work.

Not to mention the fact that the yanks already turned down a deal with the Os for Benson.

Fueling the Hot Stove...

On local Philly Sports Radio this evening, Howard Eskin said that Sheffield is going to the Cubs. This was in response to a Phillies fan saying that the Phils should try to swing a deal for him. Eskin sounded pretty confident too. Eskin has been in Philly for a long time and has pretty good sources, but I would still take it with a grain of salt.

Just passing on what I heard.

Ted,

Goony may have answered this in another thread, but I will ask you as well. Has there been any talk over there about what the Yankees would want in return for Sheff?

I imagine part of the answer may come down to how much of Sheff's $13M the trading team is willing to take on. I think about $4M of that is deferred salary.

Hoops,

No, I haven't heard any names mentioned. I would imagine that the Yanks are in pretty good bargaining position with Sheffield. I can't imagine since they picked up the option that the Yanks would eat any salary.

I wonder if Jones is going to be traded to the Yanks? If not, what are the Cubs going to do with 3 corner OF's unless they are going to move Jones to CF. It better not be Murton going to the Yanks.

Posted

Maybe Hendry is planning to get creative and move Jones to CF. A Sheffield/Jones/Murton outfield would lack defensively, but would be moderately productive.

If the Cubs keep Ramirez, they could look to upgrade at 2b (Soriano/Durham) or SS (Lugo) and be a better club offensively.

What I fear is that the Cubs will acquire Sheffield for LF, move Murton to the bench, and still pursue a CF.

For the record, I'd rather sign Alou than trade for Sheff.

The more the Yankees pay of that contract, the more they get in the trade, isn't that the way it should work?

If we pay all of sheff's contract, then they should get low grade prospects in return. I disagree that the Yankees are necessarily in the driver's seat here. Picking up his option is riskier than at first glance.

I don't want the guy, he's a whiner.

Let me remind you in the past 3 years Alou has played in 155, 123, and 98 games respectively. He will also be 41 this year. I understand the importance of OPS to an offense but I also remember Alou's horrible OF defense, throws, and baserunning miscues during his last couple years with the Cubs. That being said, I'd rather have the moderately younger (38 this year) Gary Sheffield who up until last year, played in 155 or 154 games the three seasons prior. He also provides great OPS.

People need to get off the Alou bandwagon - stop smoking that stuff.

Sheffield may be the better player, but is he worth more than Jones and Alou and the possible other prospects the team might have to give up to acquire him? That's where the question comes in-I don't think Sheffield alone is worth more than the combination of Jones and Alou (which fills one big bench spot also), and prospects that can go to another trade.

Now, I don't think the Cubs will get Alou-but if they could, I think that option would be better than trading Jones+ for Sheffield.

Ok to Sheff if the deal is cheap. Its enough that we would be picking up his entire salary (probably) - we shouldn't have to give up anyone with truly high value in addition. Eyre and Jones for Sheff, resign ARam, and sign Soriano and Roberts:

Roberts

Murton

Lee

Sheff

ARam

Soriano

Barrett

Izturis

I could live with this, assuming the rotation also gets a make over.

Although I loved Alou when he was in Cubbie blue just a few years ago, I am in no way wanting him back. He is old, will not play more than 100 games this year. He belongs in the AL as a DH.

I'll pass on Sheff as well!

Same here, I don't want either of them. Sheff is just one of those players I do not like.

I like players that help the Cubs win - I remember that whole "going with good guys" after 2004 didn't pan out so well... If Kim-Jong Il had a nasty slider I'd want him in the bullpen.

Why not as a starter? Durability issues?

Signing Sheffield would be stupid.

He's been on the decline for the past four years, and if you take him out of that NY lineup, he'll decline even more.

Say no to him, he's washed up.

I wouldn't be surprised if the North Korean "press" has clocked his fastball at 100+ mph. But as far as dictators go, I'd take Fidel Castro circa late 50's ... I understand the kid had nothing on his fastball but had a filthy curve.
