I'm not the biggest fan of this signing, but anyone who comes in and says "I want A-Rod" just hours after he was announced as manager makes me warm up to him a little bit.

Well, he claims he never said that.

Well, he was also completely shocked by speculation he'd be a manager during the ALCS.

Really? It seemed pretty clear everybody in the booth knew he had a job waiting for him.

Maybe I have it confused with the report that he was going to be the new Yankee manager, but my point was that he dismissed comments about him managing while he was broadcasting when it was well known he was in the hunt for a job. This could very likely be the same situation given his history with A-Rod and A-Rod's perception in NY.

The way I remember it was he was asked about the Yankee speculation which he adamantly denied stating that it wasn't fair to Torre to speculate and yada, yada, yada. Thom then asked him if he could be managing again next season and he basically said yes (I don't think any team names where thrown around).

Well, the way he talked in the ALCS made me believe he was prepared to take the Cubs job. And the way he talked in the press conference made me believe he hasn't gotten much into the ARod topic with Hendry, and certainly hasn't demanded ARod come with him.

If the deal was Pie and Hill, I'd go for it. The "for starters" line concerns me however.

Can Cano play 3rd? Maybe the Yanks would be interested in Theriot amoung others like Hill and Pie.

Why would the Yankees trade a 23yr old 2b that hit .342? Cano wont be traded.

I think he was saying that if A-Rod gets traded, Cano might move to 3B, giving the Yankees a need for a 2B(hence Theriot being mentioned).

No, that's not what I meant. If the Yanks trade ARod and the Cubs can't help them cover 3rd they could switch Cano to third and take in Theriot as part of the trade.

I dont like the idea if I were the Yankees of moving Cano to 3b. Its more of a comfort then. Cano played well at 2b. Why move him to another spot on the field?

I agree it would be optimal to keep him there but if the Yanks find and better 2nd baseman in a deal than a 3rd baseman it would open up options for them. What if they trade ARod for 2 star pitchers. They could sign Soriano for 2nd if Cano could slide over to 3rd.

the yankees could get much better prospects than that from any number of teams. of course, arod may not ok a trade to any of those teams...

That's an interesting point. That Yankees might effectively HAVE to deal with the Cubs if they have even an inkling of wanting to trade ARod at this point. I know it's been said ARod would accept a trade if the Yankees came to him and said they wanted him gone, but now that Sweet Lou and his offer/command are supposedly out there, maybe it's either sticking in NYC or going to the Cubs for ARod.

Oh, if only...

Fourthed.

But, on the other hand, it's better than if they said Zambrano or Prior for starters.

Pie, Hill and, let's say, Jacque (or maybe a few other prospects)... SOLD

Will Carroll indicated there is a 1% chance of A-Rod being traded to the Cubs.

He also said signing Schmidt to a 3 year deal or any deal that is greater than a year would be a dumb idea. He likes a 1yr deal with a option for the second for Schmidt.

But nobody is getting Schmidt for a one year deal with an option. He'll get at least three year, IMO. If you're only willing to offer one year, don't waste everybody's time.

Exactly. Will Carroll would only sign Schmidt if it was a 1 year deal with an option for the second.

Time to switch focus to Barry Zito!!!!

I think I'd have to disagree with Carroll on this one. I'd be willing to go three years on Schmidt. That's not to say I wouldn't pursue Zito though. I'm just saying, I wouldn't limit my offer to one year plus an option for Schmidt.

Carroll indicated that he doesnt like the work load Schmidt has taken the past couple of years. He said it would be like a Pedro Martinez situation.

I wouldnt sign a 34 yr old over worked pitcher either.

One percent? That's kinda silly unless Carroll has amazingly good sources. We're not even into the offseason.

Will Carroll on injuries = very very good

Will Carroll on transactions = very very bad
