regardless, nd is overrated and will hopefully get spanked by usc

Who unfortunately for most of this board is just as overrated.

I have a personal stake in that game as well because if USC can look much better than they really are against ND, than when Cal beats them, they have a chance at a BCS bowl.

I'm starting to think the Pac-10 is better than the SEC.

UCLA's defense and their freshman QB really impressed me. They're not nearly as bad as Raisin has tried to make them sound all year.

I think if Cal can beat USC they'd win the Pac-10 and get a BCS bid anyway, no?

true, but I'm hoping that theyll be the highest 1 loss team in the country after a win like that. Of course the Michigan vs. OSU game will probably get in the way of that.

Well Auburn is blowing out a terrible Tulane team....looks like they should move to #2 now. Washington beating Cal makes the SEC not look so good now since that's their only big win out of conference.

Auburn #2? They lost a game.

I was being sarcastic. The SEC is so good they might as well just have the top 2 teams play for he National Championship.

Down the stretch of this game - if it was mostly populated by ND fans - yes.

Regardless, if you start getting really sensitive to remarks that really don't cross the line, you don't need to be reading the thread. In an open college football thread, I hardly think a little smugness is too much to be tolerated. If it gets to the point where it goes from being respectful to coddling posters whose team just lost, it's gone too far.

If what ndistops said worked you into a lather, you really just needed to take a time out.

not really... at least they haven't lost a game yet, and they did beat the crap out of an arkansas team which has proven to be a very good team. On the road, Wazzu never really came close on their final drive, and as they are showing today against Oregon, they're a decent team. Washington only got to the 35 yard line, and Arizona State did nothing after USC took the lead. So yes, they've had some narrow margins of victory, but in none of those games was there a really serious chance for them to lose in the end.

Contrast that against Notre Dame. They got crushed by Michigan. That might only be their only loss, but they would've lost against Michigan State if the Spartans hadn't given the game away. And then today, they had to score in the last minute to win. That's 3 games that have been more dangerous for them than anything USC has played.

Yeah, ND has looked less than impressive in compiling their record. I don't even think the Michigan team that blew them out is as good as their ranking. Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if they beat USC. I think it's just a down year throughout college football, with OSU being the only true powerhouse.

Their defense has been this good all season (outside of the first quarter in Oregon) but the offense hasn't been pretty bad all year (outside of the Utah game). I don't know how bad I've made them sound, but they're not that great a team, I'd be happy with a 5th place finish.

Cowan's actually a redshirt soph.

USC beat an Arkansas team without McFadden. USC is overrated too and pretty average on offense, especially considering the weapons they have.

EDIT: USC certainly hasn't played a team as good as Michigan.

Ehh, I was mad at the heat of the moment but I obviously wasn't the only one who thought he went over the top. Seems to be a matter of opinion here.

possibly...not sold on that though. I can advise that Auburn's D looked like crap again today...I know that a lot of young players were on the field, but Tulane should not have accumulated as many yards as they did....

True, it is opinion. If I had been at all emotionally invested in UCLA beating ND, I probably would have thought he did as well. I think a lot of people were invested in the upset, and that is why there was the response that there was.

I find that keeping a small supply of worthless breakables around helps me when my team loses or a hated team wins.

Yeah, McFadden is a very good player, but he doesn't account for 36 points.

And yes, USC clearly hasn't played a team as good as Michigan. But the Irish were not even competitive in that game. Even if you ignore the two defensive TDs by Michigan, they gave up 33 points to Michigan and showed no ability to stop Hart or Henne & Co. In the five games after that, Michigan has scored 27, 28, 31, 17 and 20 points, with two of those games coming against average defenses (MSU and Minnesota).

USC may be overrated, but ND's defense is just not very good. USC's offense is underachieving, but if ND can get lit up by offenses like Michigan and MSU, I'm sure USC will put up plenty of points on them too.

Give them credit, they kept on the accelerator and made it a laugher. But without McFadden (a beast) and with Jones having the worst game of his career (3 fumbles? He had 1 last year), it wasn't a representation of what Arkansas really is. The Hogs have gotten their star tailback back, changed QBs, and gotten healthier in general since, and the result has been 120-20 in the last three games.

As for what I want to see? I don't care about teams being overrated or whatever. I want to see Arkansas do as well as possible, obviously. I also want to see either WV or Louisville, Boise St, USC, one of Mich/OSU, and Rutgers all go undefeated and see how the BCS tries to handle that debacle. It's going to take an outright clusterintercourse of a season to force wholesale change.

As an SEC fan, I largely believe that it is, bottom to top, the best conference in the country. I think the Big 12 is right there, perhaps a bit better in the middle and worse at the bottom. Pac 10? I think it's too weak at the bottom, though the top is very strong. I look at it as the basketball ACC of college football.

Cuse,

Auburn does not have a national championship team...I can vouch for that...but there are about 5 other SEC teams that are just as good as Auburn.

They may not have the best team in the nation, but they are deeper than other conferences. I understand that they don't have strong extra-conference schedules this season. Let's revisit this in late December and early January.

Because Auburn, Florida, LSU and Tennessee are all very good teams; Arkansas may be in that group, and South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama all have very good defenses and can be dangerous to any of the teams above. Even Vandy has won at Georgia and played Arkansas tough. Ole Miss has been pretty competitive too... only Mississippi State and Kentucky pretty much suck.

Other conferences? ACC is way down this year; only Clemson and perhaps Ga Tech can be considered really good teams. UNC and Duke are atrocious, and NC St, Maryland, Virginia and hell even Miami are mediocre.

The Big East has two top teams - WVU and Louisville. Pitt got hammered at home by Michigan State and is 6-1 because all the other teams they've played are crappy. Rutgers' best win is over Navy. USF is mediocre and Syracuse, UConn and Cincy are all pretty bad.

I'll do the others later.

They also have 12 teams in their conference. If Louisville, WV and Rutgers were undefeated playing the exact same schedules but they played in the SEC they would be in the top 5. IMO, too many people give them (SEC) way too much of the benefit of doubt or credit and since they play the D2 schools they pump up their stats. If I have to hear how good Auburns D is after playing the Blind Nuns of St. Marys and the like I'm going to be sick, I mean really, who's D wouldn't look good after playing teams like that? I don't deny they are a talented conference and I think Arkansas is the best team in it, thus proving to me that the "proven" SEC teams get all the votes from the good ole boys. I guess it just bugs when when people just hand the SEC this award and the reward for doing what they do without proving it. Add to that the bottom 4 completely stink. We'll see in the bowls as you said and I look forward to it.
