LA Times[/url]"]USC signee O.J. Mayo faces a two-game suspension after being ejected from a game Friday night involving his Huntington (W.Va.) High team in which he received two technical fouls and reportedly initiated contact with an official.

Mayo received one technical foul for taunting after scoring on a breakaway dunk, then a second technical for a verbal confrontation with players from the opposing team.

Mayo reportedly followed an official to the scorer's table to dispute the call and made contact, after which the official dropped to the court.

...

According to West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission rules, a player receiving two technical fouls is subject to a two-game suspension. Huntington next plays Lakewood Artesia on Tuesday at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham, N.C.

Mayo also faces possible disciplinary action for his contact with the official.

An IU recruit did the same thing in high school, and got suspended for over a year for it. It will be interesting to see if something similar happens to Mayo.

Just another example of the class Kelvin is bringing in.

He made a mistake-can people not make one mistake? Here are some of his quotes from an e-mail sent this week to the Indiana beat writer:

I feel that I will do well. Coach Sampson preaches defense and that’s what I want to come in and do. Dominate the boards, and just get extra possessions and shots for my teammates. If coach wants me to come in and rebound, defend and set screens, I will do that. I’m a sponge. I just want to learn and win. I don’t care about stats, I can score and I have range, but if it’s not needed then I'll do the little stuff to win.''

"Yeah the shooting is scary. Richmond is a dangerous place and you always have to be on guard. I heard the shots but I've heard gunshots before. It wasn’t until I heard the back glass window explode I knew that I was in danger. I never felt the bullet hit me; I was just concerned about getting out of there and to safety. My friends were with me and I was just like we have to get safe. We were all shocked cause we hadn’t even left the car and just entered the parking lot. I guess the adrenaline was pumping and it wore off and that’s when I felt the burning in my back and noticed I had been shot. As far as safety goes I fear more for my family than myself. It's sobering and real knowing that something like this could happen to you. And after the Terrence Kelly incident were he was a good kid who had a D1 Football Scholarship and was killed, you know that you need a change in environment, and where I stay is too dangerous. Almost everyday someone gets shot. It just so happened I was one of the ones who did. I am just grateful that I have somewhere to go.''

He sounds like a kid who's been through a lot in life-from all I've heard about him though, once they take him out of his environment it will be much easier for him. He made a mistake, but he seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulder, and has owned up to his mistake the whole time.

If that's too much of quotes mod I'm sorry-it's not really a published article, but just a blog from the beat writer where he provides more quotes that he couldn't get in the paper. The link is below (believe me, there are some not intelligent IU fans on there, just a friendly warning):

Eli Holdman was FINIALLY reinstated tonight. He should play high school ball Thursday.

Wow, Durant is a beast. I have to say, if the Sixers end up picking #2, I wouldn't be too upset "settling" for him. I don't want freakin Joaquin Noah, though.

In more important basketball news, Holy Cross beat American in a Patriot League shootout, 58-47, to go to 17-6 overall and 8-0 in the conference. The BIG game comes at once-beaten (by us) Bucknell next weekend. Gotta take care of business in a couple of road games before that one though.

(yes i'm aware nobody cares)

I'm not sure Durant might not pass up Oden. You may have to "settle" for Oden at #2. Durant is just a freak.

Tough call but I think the 2 teams that get either one of these guys are going to be pleased. Durant has to POY at this point. Granted TT didn't have any one that could match up with him last night but I don't think there are too many teams that do.

The Big 12 is going to be a tough out in the big dance.

I remember when you guys used to be a football conference!

Yeah I agree, the Big 12 is going to make some noise in the NCAA's. Matchups are always the key to winning it though.

Thanks to Eastern bias we get a guaranteed at least 8!

Hey, you have 50% more teams in football so it's only fair we do it in basketball.

I just hope the Cats can somehow pull off 11 wins in the Big 12. That'd get us in. I think if we can either beat UT this weekend or KU next week, we get to the 11 win mark.

Agreed on Durant's talent level, but I don't see how you can pass up a big man like Oden when you find him. There are only 3 or 4 true big men in the NBA, and Oden has the chance to be the best of them in 3-4 years (he probably will be when Shaq retires or continues to wear down). Durant's unbelievable, but there are players like him that come out at the top of the draft every year or two.

Who in the past few years do you compare to him? I think his talent level is a little better than a talent you see every 2 or 3 years. I would put him on the KG level. Plus who knows if he is done growing. He's 18 and could become a legit 7' talent. Plus they said last night he just found the weight room for the first time this year.

Again I wouldn't be mad being a team sitting there with either pick.

I see him compared to TMac a lot. I'd have trouble picking Oden over him, too.

Huge comeback win for Iowa last night, winning at Michigan 69-62. We were down by 14 at one point and down by 11 with about 13 minutes to go before putting a 20-1 run on them.

The key was Tony Freeman giving us some rare true PG play (14 points on 6 FGA, 7 assists, 2 turnovers). Haluska had 17 points, 10 boards, Smith had 22 points, 8 boards and 5 assists.

At 4-4 and with the hardest part of our schedule behind us, we keep our slim hopes of an NCAA bid alive. We would have to win out at home (IU, Illinois, Purdue, Northwestern) and get wins at Minnesota and Northwestern to finish at 10-6, 18-12 overall. Then you at least enter the BTT with a chance of an at-large bid.

Regardless we need to get a win over a hot IU team on Saturday. Hopefully they're due for a letdown after a huge win.

Here's hoping Wisconsin doesn't carry the Banner of the Big Ten in this year's NCAA, no dis-respect, the Badgers have a good team. Arlando Tucker and K. Taylor are very good but, what would a Noah, Hansborough or Durant do to Brain Butch? I don't believe, provided they make it that far, they be able handle the likes of Florida, UNC, etc.

Well Wiscy does play great defense and arevery well coached. Ithink they would suprise many with how well they would do against those type teams.

To be fair, he did take the "awful" comment back.

Anyone else really excited for this high school game on ESPN2 tonight? It will be fun to watch EJ, and to see what MJ's kids have got. MJ is expected to be in the house at North Central for the game.

If Mizzou draws Texas in the Big 12 tourney I'm going to break down and cry.

37 and 23, ridiculous

Hey, what are the chances he does it again?

Pretty good.

An Illinois vs. Indiana matchup, three days before a bigger Illinois vs. Indiana matchup in another sport. :D

Since the Bears/Colts advanced I think we have had a Bulls-Pacers game, IU-Illinois, Butler-UIC and Butler-Loyola. I think the winners were the Pacers, Illini, and Butler twice.

Northwestern lost to Minnesota at home last night. Care to give us back our win at NU ronnie??

Iowa beating UM last night might be enough to take Michigan out of the tourney. 8 games left playing Minnesota twice, MSU twice, OSU twice, at U of I and at home against IU. Even stealing a game they're supposed to lose(Pomeroy gives them their best chance with 42% against MSU which seems generous to me), they wind up 7-9 in conference and 19-12 overall. 1 conference tourney win would put them at 20 making it tough to pass them up, but you've got MSU, IU, OSU, and Wisky looking like locks, with U of I looking fairly certain to go at least 8-8 in conference with 20 wins pre-conference tourney.

Barring a couple hot runs by the middling teams, I can't see the Big 10 getting more than 5, and right now it looks like Illinois's spot to lose.

If Iowa can hold serve at home(a tough task with IU and Illinois left), they could go to 10-6 in the Big 10 and wind up with 18 pre-tourney wins, which would at least put them on the bubble, but I'd guess those early losses to ASU and Drake are going to keep killing their RPI.

Purdue needs to hold serve at home(again, tough with MSU and IU coming to West Lafayette), and they need to actual win some road games for the first time in a couple years. Penn St. and NU are obviously musts, and Iowa on the road coupled with one of those tough home wins would go a long way towards pushing Purdue equal to Illinois.

The wild card in this is that MSU could lose their lock status when put under further scrutiny. MSU's best win RPI wise is over #35 BYU in essentially a home game (Auburn Hills, MI) They'll have their chance to get a marquee win(RPI wise) with home games against IU and Wisky, but slip ups there could put them in some jeopardy, with their only 2 gimme wins on the schedule being Iowa at home and UM at home.

There's really only one good matchup this weekend with OSU at MSU, but Saturday could go a long way towards clearing things up. An Iowa loss to IU would put them at 12-11, and probably out of tourney contention An MSU win against OSU would alleviate any fears of a late season slip out of the tourney and losses by Illinois or Purdue may force those teams to just about run the table to save their seasons. I of course see none of these happening.

That was a bad loss for the Cats, but they have also stuck with UW and OSU at home for most of those games, so it's not like they are always that bad. I didn't say Illinois can't win that game at NU, just that U of I is going to have to play better than they have been playing to win in Evanston. If the Illini have the same effort they did at Purdue, NU will win. We'll have to see how it plays out.
